i am a little confused about the panasonic AJ-HD1200A deck. from what i've read, it seems to be able to push dvcproHD through an ieee1394 cable. how does this work? i thought this would be too much data, no?

DVCPRO HD is highly compressed and not much more data than DV. Well, more but nothing like uncompressed HD. It's a sweet codec

The firewire cable has the ability of pretty high data transfers. Use the AJA I/O you can capture UNCOMPRESSED 10-BIT thru the firewire connection, and that has a much higher data rate than DVCPRO HD.

Firewire can transmit 400mbps, and the DVCproHD codec runs at 100mbps, so there's plenty of headroom. DV runs at 25mbps for comparison.

so then why is there all these problems with people capturing dv to fw drives? and wouldn't these problems be compounded if the data was 4 times bigger?

Well, the buss can be slowed if other devices are connected to it, and drives slow as they fill up, and many other things can get in the way of a good capture.
