Sorting DV clips by Time/Date in FCP Bins?

Is it possible to sort clips by sequential time and date in bins? 'Media Start' is a good compromise for single tapes, but if I have a bin with several tapes and sort on 'Media Start' I get mixed clips.

In my old editing package (WIN based ULEAD VideoStudio) this was a standard way of sorting based on the video tapes embedded time stamp.

You should sort by Reel Name and then Media In. Click on the Reel Name heading to sort by tape number, then hold down SHIFT and click on the Media In column heading.

Excellent Derek, thanks! - that works perfectly.

BTW is date from the DV stored anywhere in the capture process? Can't seem to find in any of the properties tabs. Not essential, but would be useful...

Interestingly if you output your edit and the clips didn't have filters on them, you can still see the dates if you turn on data. So FCP is importing the time date info but doesn't give you access to them.

Sorry for being ignorant Craig - what would I output the edit to, and how do I 'turn on data' ?

For Example. If I input DVCAM source, straight cut edit, output to DVCAM, playback that edited DVCAM and turn on Display Data in my Sony DSR-11, I can see the meta deta (date, time, camera settings) displayed on my NTSC monitor.

Unfortunately there's no way to display that data IN FCP even if it is cleanly passed through from input to sequence and back out to tape. I would think it shouldn't be any more difficult than displaying timecode.

Graeme (or anybody else), any why to do a utilitarian plugin to display metadata "real time?" Any way this can be accessed in FX Script?

Ah - OK understood. Still no use to man or beast tho! Thanks for the insight Craig. Sounds like a good opportunity for a plugin.....
