Kevin Monahan's Master's Seminar: FCP FX and Advanced Workflow

Posted by Kevin Monahan

Hey Gang,
I hope Mike won't mind me mentioning about my upcoming master's seminar based on my book, "Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro". This is 2 days of hardcore training in FX and advanced workflow and includes a copy of my book. Classes are to be held in Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, LA and San Diego. Seating is limited. This tour is sponsored by Automatic Duck.

I can guarantee that you will see FCP in a whole new light after taking my class. These are a collection of the coolest tips and techniques to help you get to "the next level". All of you folks who are "self-trained" really need to take this class. Learn solid techniques that only the pros utilize. Advanced beginners and intermediate users would probably benefit the most here. But even advanced users, ad agency editors, trailer specialists, feature, commercial and doc editors would all benefit from seeing how you can be more creative with FCP. Whatever your level...invest in yourself, take this class!

Train with the best: I've worked at Pixar on "Finding Nemo", wrote manuals for Final Cut Studio at Apple, a veteran FCP instructor with 5 years experience, and author of one of the most popular books about FCP in 2004-2005. And yes, I'm also a working editor and motion graphics professional!

I have included a code in each of the cities I am teaching in for LAFCPUG members. To save $20 off the $499 fee, when you sign up just enter the code: lafcpug. Do you have a group? Email me for discount prices on groups of 3 or more.

You can sign up either at
www.sfcutters.org
OR
www.fcpworld.com.
Choose the city that is closest to you.
Visa and M/C are accepted.

More info about the tour at the above sites and here:

Thanks to all of you who have already bought my book and hope to see you ROCKING at my seminar. Seats are limited and filling up fast, so register today.

Cheers to you all!

No offense to Kevin who is well respected, but doesn't an advertisement like this go in the "Announcements" category?

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

I let it go for certain people...like Kevin

:-)

Oh man, I just noticed the announcements forum. Doh! Thanks Mike. You can move it over there if you like.

We in England, and I'm sore about this breaks on prices or the knowledge that you guys in LA get. I can go on an Avid master course and it will set me back £2000.00 (about $4000.00) for a weekend seminar. We have no FCP masters here. If there was some kind of thing in London that could raise the money to bring people like Kevin Monahan over for seminars that would be great. The whole FCP thing is slowly taking shape but Soho is still Avid/Smoke which is great if thats what you do.
Yes indeed, please come to London.

BBC just announced that 75% of their productions will post in FCP by 2007.

There may be hope yet across the pond!

Hi There,

Well, I'm from San Francisco. ;-)
Yes, I'm sure prices are lower for gear and training. But believe me, SF is very expensive to live in and prices for everyday stuff is pretty high. My rent, for example, is totally ridiculous.

Yeah, that's rather high - but you get what you pay for. I have a lot of respect for the Avid training program, because that's where I got my chops - and this was a 4 month long program so it was very extensive and intense (also not cheap, about $10,000). Although my price seems low, I'm a little surprised that people aren't beating down my door. I have to work hard to convince students how much they need my training (I think many have no idea how badly they actually do need it!). So, it's still too high for mass appeal. Too bad most don't realize what a bargain it is. Are you hearning me LA?? Yes--you NEED this training! ;-)

It appears that many people are totally fine with training themselves by reading a book or articles on the net. a-WRONG!!!

While these are OK methods of learning, I think that face to face, hands on training is the ONLY way to learn NLE editing properly. I thank my lucky stars I was able to spend so much time at Video Symphony in Burbank and learning from the best digital NLE trainers out there. I'm talking heavyweights like Wes Sewell and Mike Sale. I mean, these guys are great trainers, 'cause they've actually been in the trenches.

Oh, I'm quite sure you do! How about Rick Young of the UKFCPUG? He's a FCP author as well (and a damn fine fellow as well).

Well, that's a great idea. The problem is that I don't have a lot of experience putting this seminar on in a foreign country. You know, the legal stuff. I did one in Tokyo, but sorta flew under the radar and arranging it all on my own.

I think it would be cool to have some kind of FCP "Gathering of the Tribes" in the UK. We can bring folks that are great trainers over there and have a 3 day festival of seminars, events and screenings. Someone has to drive that train though, and I'm not sure I have enough bandwidth to do that on my own, not to mention the up front finances.

It's been my long-standing opinion that you should know both Avid and FCP. It used to be that way with Media 100. You had to know both back then, and you have to know the dominant platforms today. Smoke is a bit tougher because there's not much training around for that tool and there's no low cost "dumbed down" version you could practice with.

Stand by, it could be sooner than you think. It all depends on what happens around the New Year, and whether I take a job with a certain company, or not.

Much appreciated, Andy. If you think I'd have a full house there, then I'll certainly put D.C. on the short list of my next tour stops. I had been planning regional training, but now I think I'll hit the big markets first, then work my way around to smaller ones. So, if you are in a top 10 TV market, you can plan on me coming to visit your town in the not too distant future.

Thanks gang.

Cheers All,
Kevin Monahan

>>BBC just announced that 75% of their productions will post in FCP by 2007.<<

I just heard this morning that the FCP systems are being bought for the BBC *Producers* so they can rough cut their own jobs. Not sure how true or far reaching this is, but it's causing a bit of grumpiness about the place. Mind you, apparently UK agencies are recommending that their editors start learning FCP in their spare time, so that's got to be a good sign for the platform.
...and Kevin, if you go and you need a sherpa that shouldn't carry anything over 25 lbs, I'm yer gal!!

;-P

Deb! Stay away from heavy lifting for awhile. We need you healthy around here.

Another bump on this post to remind you that my seminar is only a week away. I need to have all of your sign ups in ASAP.

Take my seminar if you want to take your knowledge of FCP to the next level. There is no other training like this on the planet and I cannot promise that I will ever offer it again in LA.
