FCP Sequence Prep Procedures for Color

I'd like to post the procedures that I take prior to send the sequences
to Color. If there's something you would add or change, please respond.

CC Prep Procedures

<Duplicate the sequence prior to the CC prep-ing>

1. Lock all the Audio Tracks.

2. Compile Video Tracks to V1 while checking overlap, opacity, and compositing.
(*Use Option + Up or Down instead of Mouse for accidental over writes)

3. Create a new sequence for all the clips involving dissolves or compositing.
(Be sure to mark the timecode of the head of each clip, just in case)

4. Find all the clips with Speed Manipulation and possibly create a new sequence
with these clips.
(*May need to get rid of those clips in original timeline to prevent the confusion once
I get the CC'd sequence from Color, which may result in a pushed back
timeline.)

5. Divide the sequence into 10 minute sequences.

I'd also get rid of anything that's a Motion Project or motion template.

Hey guys,

Just had a client report back with his Color experiences on one of my projects. In this case he took the final edited sequence I turned in and sent it to a Flame guy who wanted to try out Color on it. Here's what they found:

-- Speed ramping doesn't translate well. They were able to color the clips but they didn't re-link correctly when brought back into FCP and the speed changes got screwed up. I'm in the process now of exporting all the speed-ramped clips into self-contained QTs with the same clip names and then re-import them.

-- Motion files, lower-thirds and other animations (like some 3D stuff I imported) were basically ignored. They didn't have to delete them from the final sequence.

-- I think there were issues though with mismatched frame rates and transitions; something about a 23.98 clip with a transition to a 59.94 clip got real ugly.

As always, YMMV

As for the speed ramping issue, there are a couple of approaches I take to solve the issue.

ONE:

1. Duplicate the sequence in FCP for the Color prep

2. Send the sequence out to Color and do the grading

3. Upon the Send to FCP procedure, you will get extended timeline in FCP with
all the speed adjusted clips stretched out.

4. Open the original FCP sequence, pre-color corrected one. On the clip that has the
speed adjustment, make a note of how long the clip is.

5. Come back to the Color corrected FCP sequence. Adjust the duration of the extended
clip to the after speed adjustment duration by using Command + J.

6. Copy the attributes from the clip on the original timeline and paste the attributes (only
speed characteristic) onto the clip in the color corrected timeline.

7. You will see the intended speed ramp.

SECOND approach is the one that was mentioned by John. Export and re-import.
