Video Card for FCP ColorPosted by mindsnare
Aloha
I just opened FCP Color to see what is all about and received a warning that I only had a 64 MB graphics card - Can anyone recommend a good cost effective graphics card? I am running a Dual G5 1.8 PowerPC with dual monitors. S-vid out option would also be nice, but not a deal breaker Thanks and have a great day. Sean
I would recommend going for a newer Intel machine, as any of the graphics card you can get for Color are pretty much legacy cards that run off the AGP slot. Macs now use the PCIe slot for graphics.
Otherwise, this would probably be the meanest baddest card for a G5. [ati.amd.com] www.strypesinpost.com
The 9600 is SLOOOOOOOOOOW! Actually its the X800 XT that would be the fastest AGP for Mac. Specs: [ati.amd.com] [www.amazon.com] [www.barefeats.com] You could even go for the 9800 with only 128MB of memory which is also faster than the 9600 The 9600 is only of use for driving 2x cinema displays. But depending on what your dual displays are you might need to get an ADC-DVI or DVI-ADC connector for the X800. Honestly though I would get a new Mac as Gerard says.
I still have my X800XT in my Dual 2GHz G5 and I would highly recommend updating the entire system and get a new Intel if you can afford it as you will REALLY see the benefit. For instant answers to more than one hundred common FCP questions, check out the LAFCPUG FAQ Wiki here : [www.lafcpug.org]
