quick question

in compressor, can I output a pro-res 1440x900 60p file to an MPEG2 Transport Stream at 1360x768 60p?

If not, then how?

In Compressor use the "Transport Stream" preset (you can type "transport" in the search field of the Settings window.

Then, you can go to the "Geometry" pane of the compression settings window and adjust the frame size to the new dimensions. In the "Frame Control" pane, you could leave it as is (automatic) and see how the result looks with a small test clip. Then, turn on frame controls and adjust the resizing options if the initial results (automatic) don't satisfy you.

You should also have an idea of the desired bit rate of the final file. That can be adjusted in the quality settings in the "Quality" sub-tab of the "Encoder" settings tab.

Of course, you should read through at leas the first few chapters of the user manual to understand how the interface works (if you haven't used Compressor much, or in-depth).

This kind of work is usually done by specialists (compressionists) and is as much art as science. It is not a "black box" "just do it for me" kind of thing...

Your frame sizes are non-standard. What is the destination for this? Why are you changing the aspect ratio when downsizing (from 1.6 to 1.77)? This could degrade the image...

Dimensions in the geometry tab are greyed, that's why I'm writing here, there also seems to be a problem working with anything other than 29.97 or 25 fps.

It's the science part of this that has me flummoxed, the art can follow

Compressor's MPEG-2 encoder is not as versatile as some of its competitors' and it doesn't like it if you deviate from its standard options. It's not possible to achieve what you want in Compressor so I would suggest trying out Episode to see if it does any better.

Pardon my previous suggestion. I must be losing my mind...


I did a test (created a sequence in FCP and exported it).

I can verify that Compressor doesn't like the custom frame size, nor does MPEG Streamclip. I didn't have a problem with the frame rate but only the frame size.

Is this TV/display 720p or 1080p (at full resolution). Your original content should fit within those standard frame sizes for proper (and best quality display) on the TV/display.

What device is the being played from? BrightSign?

Those dimensions you mention are non-standard. A TV should accept standard resolutions. I am guessing that your dimensions should work with output from Compressor of 720p.

Again, what is the "box" you are using?

And, why are you using 1440 x 900 to begin with? You really don't want to be changing the aspect ratio during the conversion. Something doesn't "smell" right about this...
