Program quits when I try to export

So, one of my students completed a digital story on final cut express 4. I exported as a quicktime movie for archiving purposes then tried to export using quicktime conversion to a smaller H264 that I would put up on the Internet for her and burn to a CD. About five minutes into the export process the program quit. I've repeated the process many time trying to convert to different formats. Always the same result. I imported the quicktime movie into final cut pro and tried exporting from there. Same result. Does anyone have any thoughts for me? Thanks. -lianekay

Use QuickTime Player or, better yet, MPEG Streamclip.

How much storage is left on the target drive? What format is the original in?
