HELP! 29.97(interlaced) to 23.976 (24p)?

HELP! 29.97(interlaced) to 23.976 (24p)?
November 18, 2012 02:09PM
I have shot a wedding on standard DV NTSC 29.97 (interlaced). I wanted to edit the project on a NTSC DV time line then de-interlace to 23.976(24p). Is this possible? Or do I have to convert all the unedited footage prior to the edit then edit on a 23.976(24p) time line? I thought it would be faster to de-interlace only the final as it's all the footage that would be seen.

Thanks,

Not sure why you want to cut or get to 23.976 for a wedding video... however.

You can cut into a 23.976 sequence with the 29.97 footage, but you may run into some rough looking play back. If it were me... I would de-interlace first than cut. Reason being, that, while time consuming to run the de-interlace on the bigger master files, once it is all cut up, it'll be even a bigger bitch. Not only do you have to do the de-interlace potentially on each shot, you will have to completely rebuild your sequence in a 23.976 time line.

De-interlace first.. than cut. But again, why are you going to 23.976 in the first place? You shot standard def, it's going to be played back on a DVD most likely. Seems like you are creating a lot more pain for yourself than the scope of the project, as I understand it.

Good luck!

One reason for wanting to convert 60i to 24p for DVD is the uncertainty about various DVD players handling of interlaced material. See an earlier post.

I generally produce 50p, which converts cleanly to both 25p and 50i. I agonize with each DVD release whether to make it 50i or 25p because of uncertainty about playback.

I shot wedding (on Sony Z5) initially (1st tape) in DV widescreen (29.97/ 30 fps) but tapes 2, 3 & 4 were shot 1080p24 fps.

Big mistake; now obvious.

Edited all in FCP 6. On trying to cut & paste sequences together I get " cannot nest sequences with different editing timebases".

I have 23 min.intro/ ceremony sequence as stand alone QT mov now. How can I best convert that and/or merge it w/ rest / 62 min. 24 fps sequences, or perform other action to unite the diff frame rates into one, w/ best looking quality for the DVD/ for bride & groom? Trying to beat Xmas deadline...

Thanks in advance -- Happy Holidays to all!
