Extensive list

Ok, here is my extensive list. Whew!

Timeline:

- Multiple and mixed codecs and resolutions on a single timeline, to output to a single codec/resolution (which itself is selcteable, as it is now)
- Ability to name individual clips on a timeline (even thouse derived from other clips)
- Ability to change color of individual clips
- Ability to reverse order (top to bottom) of track stack (more like AE)
- Ability to create a track in the middle of a stack, depending on where one wants it composited
- Rather than turn off/deselect tracks to be active for paste/insert, need ability to simply select a single track (rather than have to turn off all the others. Like a solo function for paste/insert.
- Ability to reload media/ dump render files / rerender for a particular clip or selection, available from the timeline, a button, menu item or right clip. Now one has to dump all render files and rerender the whole sequence.
- Ability to force render a particular clip or selection
- Ability to move and place the button bar anywhere on the timeline (not locked to the right)
- Ability to drag out (lengthen) clip duration with the mouse rather than have to move adjacent clips (ripple effect)
- Close gap - ability to specify forward or rearward

Rendering:

- Distributed rendering, even among windows machines (now that we have universal and Intel support)
- Would like render bar that updates progress in realtime on timeline or in window

Effects:

- Title 3D: Make the damned curser move like it does in other text programs, not jump back to original placement all the time
- Greenscreen: Buy dvGarage's dvMatte Blast and integrate into FCP. Or, dvMatte Pro, rewrite as FXPlug and integrate into FCP.

Audio:

- Would like better integration of audio meter (Avid's approach to put it at the top of the timeline is very good); FCP's is clunky and cluttered.
- NEED normalize audio function directly within FCP. This should be a priority.
- Buy Soundsoap and integrate it into FCP. Even version 1 would be useful.
- Better EQ. For example, to lift the EQ from Soundtrack or Bias that has a nice graphic display for 4 bands of parametric would be very useful
- Sountrack Pro is overkill for many of us. A stipped-down version completely integrated within FCP would be VERY useful.

Other programs:
Motion: Nice program, but would like basic version completely integrated within FCP.

Conclusion:
Basically, I'm looking to use FCP for everything that might be used in a production, that an editor might do, without leaving the app. This would include more emphasis on audio within the app, but to integrate some of Motion's things right into FCP as well. The current approach, to have to leave and return to FCP, I find less than useful.

An integration of some After Effects functions with the elegance of FCP would be a beautiful thing.

"- Ability to change color of individual clips"

You can color label clips.

"- Ability to create a track in the middle of a stack, depending on where one wants it composited"

You can do this.

"- Rather than turn off/deselect tracks to be active for paste/insert, need ability to simply select a single track (rather than have to turn off all the others. Like a solo function for paste/insert."

Hold the Option key.

"- Ability to force render a particular clip or selection"

You can do that. Switch off the clip's visibility.

"- Ability to move and place the button bar anywhere on the timeline (not locked to the right)'

Put a lot of spacers on the right

"- Ability to drag out (lengthen) clip duration with the mouse rather than have to move adjacent clips (ripple effect)"

You mean a drag overwrite function? That's kind of what a roll edit is.

"- Distributed rendering, even among windows machines (now that we have universal and Intel support)"

Distributed rendering would only be possible on machines that have the application, which would preclude Windows machines.

"- Would like render bar that updates progress in realtime on timeline or in window"

That would suppose background rendering.

"- Title 3D: Make the damned curser move like it does in other text programs, not jump back to original placement all the time"

Not sure what this one means.

"- Greenscreen: Buy dvGarage's dvMatte Blast and integrate into FCP. Or, dvMatte Pro, rewrite as FXPlug and integrate into FCP."

That's great if you're working in DV.

"Motion: Nice program, but would like basic version completely integrated within FCP. "

Please good no. There is already basic motion integrated into FCP. It's a video editing application. Making it do everything will just make it more clunky and kludgy.

Well, that's how it is now. If you put a Motion JPEG A clip into a DV NTSC timeline, it can export to DV NTSC. What you probably want is playback without rendering.

> - Ability to name individual clips on a timeline (even those derived from other clips)

This you can also do. Select the clip, Modify - Make Independent, APPLE-9, re-enter the name. Not my favourite thing to do, though.

> Ability to reload media/ dump render files / rerender for a particular clip or selection

Interesting concept, but there is a way to do this. To force a re-render of a section, select the section, use Clip Disable (CONTROL-B) to turn them off, then use the same command to turn them back on. Not sure what you mean by "reload media", but you can press SHIFT-D to forcibly disconnect the clips from the source media, and then File - Reconnect Media to link them back to the files. A useful troubleshooting step.

You can. Both the default Arrow tool and the Roll (R) tool can do this. And if you open the clip in the Viewer and key in new In/Out points, there's no rippling. The only time it ripples is if you apply a Speed adjustment in the timeline, which is a longtime peeve for me.
