From what I can tell, you mark a region in to out and use Option backslash
It cuts off the front and back of the clip and shuts the gaps.

Anybody used/find use for this? Weird but slightly wonderful?

There's also Option-[ and Option-] to trim to the beginning or trim to the end.

On a side note , I stumbled across Loren's FCPKeyguide video youtube. It was great putting a voice to the Maestro and his work. He has a wry sense of humour smiling smiley

is this destructive to the original material in the Events or source or whatever it's called folder? Had read that some edits destroy the original clips -- that can't be - can it?

No - no edit is destructive as far as I know or have seen.
