John Buck's Timeline (history of editing)
Adobe asked Apple to shut down Final Cut (when Apple bought it from Macromedia)

This excerpt is a particularly interesting read

What does this have to do with FCPX?
I have my own speculation but I'll just say I think it involves licensing, IP, complete control of the code base (even the naming conventions) and not relying solely on any other outside product to sell Macs.

BTW the book if you're interested.

and the part two of the book likely more relevant to FCP.

Frankly, I don't care how Apple makes their money. They can be selling oranges and sell FCP on the side, and as long as it's a good NLE, and it helps me make better pictures (or for some people, it suits their business models), I'm happy. Appealing to the mass market, targeting the high school skateboarding market, is none of my concern.

The fact that they released FCP X without a clue in hell what a pro market is, and how critical broadcast monitoring is to a professional product, seriously worries me. It may work as a business model, but I'm not buying FCP X because it's a business model. I'd buy it if it was a good editor for professional purposes, and I don't think anyone has seen that yet. And the nicest thing anyone can say about it is that it is not ready for most professional uses yet and certainly not ready for my use.

Hi Strypes, where are you located ? so I can check that it's not an error that you can't download, "Timeline". It seems Amazon have it blocked in Ireland but I can check Apple for you, John
