Does FCP X require footage to be copied to the drive the app resides on?

Hi group, starting my first project in over 6 months, I own FCP X and Premiere Pro 5.0, I just bought the Canon XF100 MXF file format and used a 5dmk2 and 60d on this project for a hospital. I shot a 5 hour surgery and have something like 250gb of raw footage.

My question is, does FCP X require you to copy the footage to the drive as i only have to mbp laptops with 512gb flash drives and about 250gb of free space, I have the footage on two 2tb sata drives and want to edit off that drive but it seems like fcp x would need to copy the files to the drive unlike Premiere which is like fcp 7.

Sorry if I answered my own question but I am not sure have had many new issues to deal with and have dropped water on my #1 laptop so that's toast... just a messed up week, your help is appreciated I really hate having to choose to learn all over on maybe two editing systems at the same damn time... but that's life.
