Importing photos for time lapse -- Slows down system

I have several time lapse sequences I shot in Raw format on 5D Mark II. I read to keep these in the raw format when importing into fcpX, but it seems to be slowing down my system, takes a VERY long time to import into fcp, and gives me spinning beach balls...Any advice? Thanks. David
