FCP X can not break apart Audio Clip items

In FCP X with my clips on the timeline I can detach the audio but not break apart clip items to separate the audio tracks. In the inspector/Audio I did select 'Dual Mono' but still have no success in separating the audio tracks on the timeline. what can be done to separate the Audio Tacks on the timeline. Even when I Right Click on the timeline the drop down menu still shows the 'Break Apart Clip Items' greyed out.
