FCP X lagging What kind of graphics card?

Final Cut pro x lags and I wanted to know how to make it go faster.


Here is the stats on my early 2009 Mac Pro:

Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)



Here is a graphcs card I was thinking about and not sure if it is compatible with my type of mac pro.
AMD (ATI) Radeon HD 6750M graphics card

i want it to run as smooth as possible.

Let me know if there is more I can do besides just updating the graphics card.

Even more likely is that you're not using a fast enough drive for whatever media you're trying to edit. That's usually the number-one reason for sluggish response. What are the specs for your video?

I put a Solid Disk Drive in my late 2011 Mac Book Pro the other day.

It blew me away. Computer starts and shuts down in a matter of seconds. Programs open instantly.

I can not say much about FCP X performance though because I am doing other stuff at the moment.

But my guess is that it is going to make a significant difference.

Because FCP X is basically built on a data base that is constantly trying to read data from the data base i.e. the events folders.

When buying I paid attention to the read speeds and didn't get too hung up on the write speeds. I do after all write to external drives.

First time that I had an internal drive less than 500GB in 7 years now i.e. bought 250GB and I am an extremely happy camper.

How can I tell what video I am using?

also I have 16 gb of ram would upgrading to 32 gb be better? and if so is there any specific type of ram or brand that is better than the other or are they all about the same?

What is the difference with these graphics cards? Is the cheaper one any different?

Speaking of SSD's. I just put a Solid Disk Drive in my late 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 as my boot drive. It made a pretty big difference. FCPX and PPro CS6 seem to run smoother and snappier. I've heard some people have made raids out of two SSD drives to do editing. I might try that someday. There is all kinds of ways of getting more performance out of your Macs. This is just one of them.

What is your native format?

Are you using Optimised Media or Proxy?

Are you playing your media files from an external drive?

With respect to the latter if so what is it?

Native format, do you mean, what the camera produces? From a Canon 6D 1080P which is H.264. It's not bad but I rather work in ProRes.

I never worked in Proxy.

I use an external raid. CalDigit VR.

By Native format I mean the format that you recorded in.

But good you are using optimised Media.

Another option would be to switch to Proxy Media.

You can still do this even if you didn´t do it whilst importing.

But I am wondering about your drive situation

Have I understood you correctly you have your Events and Projects on an internal Drive?

If so this is never a good idea! Check how full your internal drive is one way or the other!
