I have been a Documentary Editor for almost 12 years. Most of these years were spent in Chicago working on docs for networks like The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, TLC & A & E. That said, I am looking to move to the West Coast within the next year. I know the LA market is very competitive and I am no young pup (38 years old) but I?ve always wanted to edit movies. The whole follow your dreams mid-life crisis thing huh! To back up my case, I have the drive and the editing chops.
I am humbling asking advice from Editors who actually work on movies in the LA area. Do I need to join the Editor?s guild and try to get hired through them or should I try to take some other job on set to get my foot in the door? I am willing to take a lot of steps back to take huge leaps forward. If I do need to get my union card, should I apply as an Editor or an Assistant Editor?
Docs and movies are two totally different entities and I am willing to do anything (legally of course) to work in Hollywood. I am in it for the long haul and know it may take some years to at least get my foot in the door but I would love any input.
