Recording Engineer 2 years into the industry looking for advice, mentoring, new job

Hello all,

I graduated recording school 2 years ago and got my first job right out of school at a small voice over studio. Now, 2 years in, I'm ready to move on to the next big step, and start challenging myself and my creativity. Although, I'm finding it's much more difficult than I thought. Is it really all about who you know in order to find work? Does anyone advise cold applying to studios? I'm feeling a little lost, and would love some help in how to get my foot in the door.
