Using special characters and spaces in file names and footage logs

Hi everyone,

A lot of time has passed since I first heard that using special characters and spaces in file names and footage logs is a big no-no due to possible interference with computer language. Is this still an issue? I have some files that I would like to include parentheses in the file name but am reluctant to do so until I hear otherwise. I remember reading somewhere that this is not an issue any longer. Will someone please confirm? Thank you.
