In Avid... I can only sift through individual bins and that is prehistoric.

i thought that was being / had been addressed?

does the $500 plugin fix that,
or is the $500 plugin for "Phrase Search"?

It's addressed with Phrasefind, although $500 for a text based search tool in 2011, is a little steep. It's exactly what I feel about the $500 omf export option in FCP X. It would be interesting if someday someone sells a plugin that enables tracks in FCP X for $500, although that would be one hell of a feature. And I don't mean like a secondary storyline, but actual tracks that you can toggle on and off, like subtitle tracks and supers, etc...

ok, Phrasefind will look for and find text phonetically,
but what about if i need to Find All "CU Dog" shots?

FCP's find tools were essential for me on the last project,
searching for keywords added to Master Comments columns.

You could rent a cat, have it sit in front of the screen, then scrub, and when the cat's tail fluffs, you know there's a dog CU.

I have two excellent rentals here if you need them. Low miles. High fluff.

You've hit the cat right on the head!
In the old days you would buy the cat, upfront ownership.
Now you have to lease-the-pieces....the fur, the meow, the cheshire smile.
Its lease-by the month...and wait for it..

It de-furrs me to paws.....a while!

The Find tool in MC 5.5 is vastly improved from previous versions. Very useful now.

With the improved Find tool, you can quickly and easily find what you need by searching through clips, sequences, script text, the timeline, and monitors. You can even search for material in bins on local and shared storage.

I am on the new Avid. I may buy it in the next couple of days. I don't think you can do a text search across multiple bins. PhraseFind does it. I don't need a phonetic search tool, but if I do, I don't mind forking out $500 bucks for it. I just need a text based search tool that can do find and replace, limit search to a column, or omit certain keywords. You can do it in TextWrangler or TextEdit. And minus the find and replace option, you can do all that in FCP or even in the Finder. That has to be free. It's 2011, and all modern databases need an effective search tool.

Wow. On closer inspection, I think it actually does text searches without phrasefind. And holy @#$%&! Phrasefind is amazing! Do a search for a word, click phrasefind, and boom! The search results come up and when you click on a clip, it puts an in point on right on the word!

Editshare is making a big announcement on the 8th so maybe they'll release the promised Mac version this month.
