Best format to export for imovie8 from edited mts on premiere pro cs4 on a pc
July 12, 2012 08:24AM
Someone brought in some mts files to have the right channel audio doubled.
this was easy with right fill filter for audio.

It was just a couple of keyclicks to do this in premiere pro and i added this
audio filter to the three mts clips.

No video editing is required as these clips will be edited in imovie 8 on a mac laptop.

Here lies the problem, on export I outputted 1440x1080 upper field, Apple Mov file,
h264 compression 48k audio, anamorphic 4:3 settings.

On ouput the movie would go from being 1G for 30 minute clip to 20G for the output
movie.

Is there any other output setting with a much lower file size?

You can easily replace the audio track in QT Pro.

This person may not have Quicktime Pro on his mac, all I know it is a laptop, circa 2010,
and it has imovie 8 on it.

I have QT Pro on our Mac, but FCP 6.02 does not natively read mts files like premeire pro does.
I settled on exporting 1440x1080 29.97 upper field Apple mov file h264 encoded HD anamorphic,
but even at 12MBs data rate, the exported mov has taken a generation loss.

Thamks for the help

Sorry. I mistook it for QTs. I don't think iMovie does ProRes, unless you have Motion or FCP X installed, or FCP 7. You best choice would be AIC, but the file size would be much bigger.

Can they deal with the mts themselves? If so, just output native. If not, I'm guessing part of the reason they gave it to you was to convert it to something they could use, which, yeah best bet would be ProRes or AIC. You shouldn't see any loss of quality if you've got the settings right on ProRes. That's part of the beauty of it, loss is almost imperceptible.

The problem was that the mts was recorded in stereo, the video was fine, but the left channel was humming.
As the person only had imovie8, he does not have the editing functions that Adobe Premiere CS4 or FCP 6 have.

It's all sent back to the customer, it was a learning experience.

Thanks for your advice.
