"Exception: a serious error has occurred!" with latest TRIAL of MC

Today I've downloaded the latest FREE TRIAL Media Composer (8.5) for PC. My computer is fairly new (barely 5 months old -- see specs below). Upon loading the software, I imported a few small files just to play around with. These files seemed fine. I put them into a sequence. But the sequence won't play (in the record monitor). And they won't play in the SOURCE monitor either. Oddly, I can scrub these shots in the seq. timeline, or in the rec / source windows. But they just won't PLAY. When i hit "play", i get this error message instead.

"Exception: a serious error has occurred!
It is recommended that you restart the application immediately."

I'm pretty sure I've ruled out improper codecs or corrupted media.
I've tried .jpg, .mov, .avi, .mp3, .wav.
I've checked my QT player - i have the latest version of QT (v. 7.7.8)
I've checked import settings. Nothing unusual there.
Currently, I have no media drive, so the MXF files are generated on the C-drive.
Drive space: i have nearly 100 GB of free space.
I have also tried trashing the media database files, and restarted the software. That didn't help.
I have also tried UN-INSTALL & RE-INSTALL the software. That didn't help either.

I haven't moved a project from one computer to another, or had issues with AMA files. I haven't used any AMA files. All I've done was grab the TRIAL version of Avid and started it up.
It should work fine. There should be no issue with my graphics card either.
So, I'm at a loss.

Suggestions? Unfortunately with the TRIAL version, I have no tech support from AVID.
