Vanished root quicktime file while exporting

I'm on an OSX Tiger. I was exporting from FCP to Soundtrack. I had an error alert. I closed and reopened FCP to find OFFLINE MEDIA. My root clip vanished from my external hard drive. Gone. Not anywhere in spotlight or the trash. Any advice would be great. I don't know what happened.
