Color Can't Save

Color 1.4, Dual G5, OS 10.5.8.
For some reason, Color beach balls whenever I try to save. Autosave works fine. Was ok on Color 1.0, but the upgrade seems to have broken this somehow. Only fix I've found is to launch Activity monitor and kill the gzip process. Then it saves fine, until the next time I try saving the project, then I have to kill gzip again.
