Problems capturing with FCP 4.5 and JVC VS30U Deck

I a having problmes capturing footage with my deck. I have a VS30U plugged into a 1Ghz 15 inch G4 Powerbook. (old casing). I am running FCP 4.5 HD and capturing to an external firewire 400 drive.

This is an intermitant proble. I log my clips and set to batch capture. It rwinds the tape and then begins to play it. The image on my screen in the capture window then freezes. The deck continues to play and if i hit esc it tqake 5 to 10 minutes for FCP to stop caturing and go back to the batch capture ready screen.

Does anyone know if there is a setting i have wrong? I have tried both NTSC firewire and NTSC Firewire Basic. I have had more successful attempts with FireWire Basic but still not 100%. Has anyone had this problems or think of a solution it would be a great help.
