Custom PSD created Shape _is transparency possible in normal state

We are authoring a NONlayered DVD motion menu. We created a lotus flower graphic in Photoshop and imported into the palette/shape tab as flattened and merged PSD files. I can't make it invisible in the normal button state. Is it possible to have the graphic visible only in the selected and activated button states and be invisible in the normal state without using a Layered Menu approach? When i use an Apple provided shape ,ex. arrow, I can make it invisible in the normal state by turning off opacity for color overlays. that doesn't work on ours. Ideas?

Using DVDSP 4 and Photoshop CS vs8.
