Problems with DISC End ACTION when Chapter SKIPPING !!

Connection problems with DVD STUDIO PRO version 4.2.1

on a MAC OS X Version 10.5.4
2x 2.8 GHZ Quad Core Intels
10 GB RAM 800 MHz

Our biggest problem has been with the connections.. All dealing with END Actions of a TRACK / STORY or Chapter Skipping through a TRACK and what happens when you reach the end of that TRACK or STORY..

If our main feature had 12 chapters, and each Chapter Menu Target was linked to a Scene Selection page button. Each of those connections works fine.
**But the End Action for the last chapter only works as long as the USER does not chapter skip forward. If the USER does Chapter Skip Forward they will be taken to the next VTS in the project, in this project example it would go to the TRAILER track, When it should have gone to our MAIN STILL page with Button 1 Highlighted.

We have tried placing a TARGET in the END JUMP but that Connection only works on the Studio Pro Simulator and not on any DISC or in any DVD players.
If we place a TARGET in the NEXT JUMP, that will fix our Chapter Skipping Problem. But when we do that we lose our menu return from the feature.. (if you are playing any Chapter after Chapter 1 and press the menu button you will always go back to BUTTON 1 Regardless of the TARGETS connection) Also giving the NEXT JUMP a target knocks out all of the TIME DISPLAY DATA for the USER to view on their DVD player.

We tried to place a chapter at the end of the TRACK so that if the user does skip they are then immediately taken to the desired menu and button designated by the DVD Author. But doing so makes the COMPILE Reject our request and tells us that a "Invalid Marker position. Distance between markers must be at least .4 seconds" If we move the marker back more into the track we end up cutting Audio and even Video at times. We Encode all of our Video and Audio material with a 1 Second Buffer at the Head and 2 Seconds at the Tail.

Our Second Major Problem is with STORIES or PLAYLIST.

If you select the Theatrical Trailer, the Trailer Plays and Ends Fine. But once again if the USER Chapter Skips forward then the DISC takes you to the STORY or (PLAYLIST) of the THEATRICAL TRAILER. We want the USER to come back to the SPECIAL Feat Menu with THEATRICAL TRAILER Highlighted.
So now the USER gets an experience of thinking the DISC is Damaged or BAD, they are experiencing this DOUBLE PLAY as we call it if they continue to Chapter Skip while watching a TRACK or STORY.

Stories is a simple, kind way to deal with Chapters other than using Scripting to do so.
If the end user chooses to skip a Chapter during viewing, there's not much you can do as it will jump right past an End Jump Chapter marker.

Perhaps there is some scripting that you can learn to only allow a chapter skip to the end of that chapter and then end jump back to the menu. I can't tell you what script might help this though.

Why does the end user care if they skip a chapter to the next one, that they can watch the contents of the next one?

John - I think they are cool with Chapter to Chapter skipping but don't want Title to Title skipping.

steveswisz - Sounds to me like setting the UOPs is your first option to sort the vast majority of players out. So select the Track/Story and set the UOPs for each. Focus on ensuring Title Play is disabled for all (at Track/Story Level aka Titles) and then you may want to select the last Chapter in a Track and set Chapter specific UOPs for that Chapter disabling Next Program for example.

That way the user can Chapter skip but should not be able to Title skip within or out of the VTS. Also the last chapter has the Next Program disabled too for another level of security for those "Trigger Happy Chapter Skippers". Yes that is their official name.

Ok if you really really want to force things you can also use the advanced mode of Configuration Tab to set the Next/Prev Jump option. Basically this gives you the power to control where the user is taken, a Menu for example, but also make a multi-PGC Title behind the scenes and this means you may loose LCD info display on the DVD Player. No runtime, chapter number etc.

Hope that helps a bit,

Is there a good resource for learning scripting in DVDSP?

Scripting will not help you with this. The scripting is not that advanced and is nothing like Actionscript/Lingo type languages. Of course Blu-ray and Java offer this level of control with Scripting on next gen titles,
