September 01, 2009 07:43PM
I sent it to Compressor, chose DVD 120min setting
got 2 files
did my DVD SP project, inserted blank DVD, It shows a message
"not enough space on output media"
at the top shows 4.9GB
Isnt compressor job to make it less than 4GB for a standard DVD ????

Please help

How long is the show? Don't just tell us from memory, check the movie files.

Derek is right; tell us more so we can help you with Compressor and DVD SP encoding.
But the easiest way to do it is

1) Export a Self-contained movie out of FCP.
2) If the movie is HDV, convert the .mov to Uncompressed 8-bit.
3) Open up DVD SP and go through Preferences; select the type of SD DVD you want to make.
4) Drag the Uncompressed file into Assets (insert tab on).
5) Make the proper selections for how DVD SP is to play the movie.
6) Click on Simulate. If it plays ok:
7) Click on Burn DVD and it will be done; DVD SP will select the best settings.

Are you burning just the movie using only a track? if you are only burning the movie then i would say u are gonna take a small hit because you need to get the size smaller.
I had a 4.3gig file give me hell to go on a dvd.

Things like using the highest custom quality settings (everything in the quality tab being at best will jump the size) will cause larger size.

If that is not the case and you have a menu and more than 1 track. I'd guess.
The menu takes up space on the dvd. How much more i am unsure. But is does take up space.

In compressor use a heavier compression to squeeze the audio down below 125mb.

Now for a soapbox moment:
COMPRESSOR 2 WAS BETTER THAN COMPRESSOR 3 FOR QUALITY.
i am done.

actually 2 tracks, 1 for audio and 1 for video

Thanks

Just drag the SD .mov into Assets window of DVD SP; skip Compressor. Compressor is complicated; you have to make a lot of choices and it takes time to figure them all out.

So just drag the .mov (which includes both pic and sound) and let DVD SP sort it out. Try it.

1. >7) Click on Burn DVD and it will be done; DVD SP will select the best settings.
DVDSP does not choose the best settings it uses the setting you setup in the Prefs! in this case the SD DVD ones (Encoding > MPEG-2 SD).

2. Use ref movies unless you come accross issues with this workflow and can't figure out the issues for the problems.

3. Use Compressor 3 not Compressor 2 nor DVDSP. Don't chase down old discs and please don't call Apple asking for a downgrade. Don't believe everyone on a soapbox just cause they are on a soapbox smiling smiley

4. Complicated is relative. For some Compressor is too basic... if you're in this situation again and don't learn how to use Compressor you'll be at the mercy of others next time aswell. Also, if you use DVDSP to encode, your audio won't be Dolby Digital so your bandwidth will take a hit cause 1.536 Mbps will get eaten by audio right away (instead of 0.192 Mbps).

5. You have 2hrs 18mins of content to get on the disc. The highest bitrate you can use for the average is 4200 kbps if using 192 kbps AC3 for the audio. If you're using WAV for the audio then under 4Mbps... you'll want to do a VBR encode either way and set max to what you feel best. 7.6 mbps for example but the avg. is the key to fitting all your content on to disc.

"Compressor is complicated"
given that it has numerous presets, that is just not true.

however...
the movie is OVER 120mins
so the 120min preset is not going to work. (surprise surprise!)

so NOW it gets a little more complex,
as you have to understand datarates, and set the encoding setttings manually.
THAT's too complicated for me smiling smiley

is there a 150min preset? (don't have access to FCS right now)

Apple stop at 120mins cause they know after that you're going to be making a pretty poor looking DVD(-R) (in general). But you can make a 150min preset easy by duping the 120 min one and changing the Avg. bitrate to 3.8 and saving it as a 150 min preset...

Use a bitrate calc to help you figure this stuff out:

I want to say to ALL, THanks!
I think you guys deserve another lunch smiling smiley

I am gonna stick with the non-pro IDVD '08
Reason?
See this screen shot, idvd doesnt complain my movie is too big or too much bitrate.
As long as the Quality arrow is in GREEN or YEllow, i'm good smiling smiley
