rotate/scale from center?

Seems like it should be fairly easy, but I can's seem to find any way to rotate and scale an object from the center. Both the rotation and scale change move the text object off in a big arc away from center.

I found you can use Basic 3D to rotate from center, but nothing yet for scale.

Ultimately I'm trying to have a 74pt text rotate slightly and expand to fly out of screen through the center of the hole in the letter "p" in the text.

Control click the text element and select "anchor point" from the list. Move the little bullseye looking circle to the center (turning snapping on helps define precisely) and your scales will happen from the center.
