TRACEY'S FRAGMENTED FACES

In the tracey fragments trailer, there is a fragmented face at the very beginning.

I have been experimenting with a few things to see if i can get the same effect for my new doc.

i keep looking at the trailer but i cant seem to figure it out.

Does anyone know how this is done?

I have tried:

1. square cropping a face and creating 10 layers > then 50% opacity on all tracks with different sized crops.

2. 6 layers cropped to square parts of the face v1 staying fully opaque

attempt 1 was kinda close but no cookie. and i am short of ideas right now.
