timecode removal

HI all! Just wondered if there is anyway to remove time code from a video? Father in law wants me to make a home movie from the out takes from a documentary made about him. The company gave him all the DVDs of the footage but it has time code on it. Is the best method to just cover it with a black bar? Any other methods? I know the time code is used to protect the material, but since they gave it to him and its just for a home movie hopefully its okay to ask this question. I know I use time code to protect my material as well. Thank you for any ideas! Jen
