Applying Mattes in Motion 2

I've been trying to a Matte an object with an alpha channel in Motion 2.0 and for some reason it's not as straight forward as it is in FCP. First, I've created the matte and then I want to cut out a photo using the matte. Second, I used many of the blending options in Dashboard, after I applied the matte, and the only one that seemed to work, partially, was "Stencil Alpha." It appeared to matte the photo but it also eliminated the background. Then I noticed that after enlarging the parameters of the matte, a matte was created for the entire background but not my photo. If you know of anyway to matte photos in Motion I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance.

Select the Photo and go to Object > Add Image mask (Command-Shift + M). Drag the Matte object to the image well in the Image Mask properties (Dashboard or Inspector).
