import ai to motion - i do not have illustrator
November 10, 2008 09:58AM
I have read about scripts to bring illustrator ai's to motion.
I don't have AI, but I do have programs that generate them...
Adobe PS, and 3ds Max.

But when I import in Motion the ai is greyed out!

Any workaround for a PC/Mac user?

Try saving as .pdf

Try saving as .pdf

When I do this, all I get is a square, and what I want is the spline I
created with the path tool. Even with the PDF and with fixed resolution off.

I don't believe you can export vectors from Photoshop.

What got me started was using the export paths to illustrator function in PS.
But when you click on the .ai from a PC, the .ai file is grayed out.

Yeah, I think there's an issue with PC generated .ai files. You might want to take a look at Vector Designer:

i tried this app, but it doesn't do ai as export.

I think i'll log this into "I give up as I use PS on a PC" bin!

Now I have Illustrator (on a Vista machine), but I can only read pdf
files from it, and ai files are greyed out.

I want to create shapes in illustrator and use them as emission sources for
particles, but so far I am stumped... (and I believe pdf is a raster format)

PDF is a vector format, if you save your Illustrator files as .pdf, they will be vector in Motion, you just need to turn off fixed resolution. But Motion reads .ai files as well - you may need to first open and save them on a Mac, I've heard Motion won't read PC .ai files directly but haven't tested it...
