I'm helping build an edit bay for a non-profit. We'll have 3 computers, all running the same NLE. We'll have a giant pool of media. And we'd like for people to be able to copy that media onto a personal drive and then cut it. It would also be great if they could move from computer to computer with their projects. Using FCPX would be helpful as it would be the cheapest option (remember, we're a non-profit).

So here's how I'm thinking of Setting up the flow.

3 mac mini computers
Each computer has a 2 TB drive, with the same name, and the same media in the same events
1 computer serves the others the project files, when a user wants to use the project file, they first change permissions in the finder. When they're done, they unlock it again.
If the permissions thing doesn't work, we just move the projects over.

How does this sound, doest his make sense? I went to the apple store and told them about this and they said I might want to check out AVID! If I could afford a Unity for this non-profit, believe me, I would!

Hi guys, first post...Just moved from a quad-core to a newer 6-core tower w/ 64GB of ram at work a week or so ago. I'm using the same version of FCP7 and QT as my old machine, but when I try and export to an QT/h264 file using QuickTime conversion I get a general error, even w/ a 5 second clip. Most of the other formats seem to export correctly but I did just get an out of memory error when I tried to export to an Apple TV clip...

I looked around Google a bit and I found some info about the "Limit/Capture Export..." box being checked but I have that unchecked. I couldn't really find much else so I figured I'd check here to see if this maybe happened to anyone else here...Thanks, TC

So here's a strange one!

Been editing a twelve minute piece on FCP 7. A tutorial on changing spark plugs. Used a bunch of lower thirds for step numbers and some white highlights here and there. we did a two minute simple animation that used a few PSD files right in FCP. Everything was working great, no problems.

Then out of no were yesterday, all my sync was off by almost a second, but it did not reflect that on the clip itself. Any graphic; lower third, text, highlight that i had inserted would glitch on itself by basically repeating a few frames of itself half way through the duration of the clip.

I tried re booting the system as my thought was that maybe I had been rendering so much that maybe the computer just freaked out a bit...and nothing. I actually couldn't restart FCP after that cause it said I had no VRAM available to run the program.

then i deleted all of the render files, re booted and was able to get back into FCP. Then did a full re render of the timeline. That brought my sync back to vid/aud but the fix for the graphics is basically i take, say a three second lower third, grab one end of the clip, pull it as to shorten the length, drop it. Then resize the clip back to its original length, re render it... and now it works....

Totally scratching my head on this one...

Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Running a three month old tower with plenty of RAM and free hard drive space.

Thanks!

Manufacturer's Description:

DVCAM / DV Play and Record
DVCAM is Sony's professional version of the ubiquitous DV format. DVCAM offers better picture quality, superior multi-generational dubbing quality and greater dynamic range in its audio section. DV offers longer recording duration and less expensive tape stock prices. The DSR-11 will play and record in both formats letting the user choose which features are most significant to the final product.

NTSC and PAL Compatibility
Though the DSR-11 will not convert one signal to the other, the machine will play and record in both NTSC and PAL standards. When recording through the analog input, the switch on the back of the unit must select the proper color standard. When recording from the digital input, the machine recognizes the standard automatically.

i.LINK Interface
The DSR-11 is equipped with a 4-pin i.LINK connection. This connection allows easy duplication of entire tapes as well as one-cable digital transfer of audio, video, and command signals to a connected VTR or PC. When downloading video via the i.LINK connection, you can also copy the time code from a non-VTR source such as video that has been edited on a PC.

Auto Repeat Feature
When set to Auto Repeat the DSR-11 can repeatedly play back a program. Just after the DSR-11 reaches the end of the tape, the first complete blank portion, or the first index point, it automatically rewinds and repeats playback of the segment.

Wired Remote Compatibility
The DSR-11 is equipped with LANC (Control L) and Control S connectivity. Several control components work with LANC providing basic machine control for a linear edit situation. The DSRM-20 jog shuttle remote will attach to the DSR-11 via the Control S connection.

Offered at $530.00 (buyer pays shipping)
Used. Like new condition. Original packaging not available. Cables, remote and manual all included.
I just installed a blackmagic intensity pro card (HDMI). The card shows up in system profiler in slot 4, and I have downloaded the current drivers (I also tried 9.1, which is the previous version) I haven't been able to get picture on my monitor (vizio 32" flat screen with hdmi). I know that this monitor works and that the cable is good. The monitor just says 'no signal.' over a blue screen. I have checked all settings in fcp 7, tried both hdmi ports, checked 'all frames' and refreshed av devices. under 'video playback' I have tried every blackmagic setting with no luck. If the card was defective would it still show up in system profiler? Could both hdmi ports be blown?
thanks...very frustrated!

I have a dance video clip with ambient audio from the house CD player.

I want to sync the 12 clean m4a audio tracks to the clip. Bottom line is Pluraleyes demo version did this perfectly.

If I try to sync say one of the audio files to the clip it does work. X finds the matching waveform and lines it up. But if I select all 12 audio tracks and the clip all I get is a compound clip with all the audio tracks stacked up under each other. No sync.

Asking too much of X?

Good Morning Everyone,

Silly problem. Color Balance won't work! I move the playhead to the clip and then highlight the clip. Then I <s></s>go to Effects/Image Control/Color Balance. I drag Color Balance and drop it on the clip. Then I go to the viewer, click filters and the Color Balance controls are displayed. The problem is, the sliders do not change anything and inputting numbers does nothing as well. I've used this process in the past with success. Can't figure out why it will not work. The same applies to other Image Control functions.
I tried to play a test on 2 dvd players (not pc/ mac).
First player showed the interlacing lines inc image ghosting. At stages of non shaky
footage image was perfect. On second player, interlacing lines were almost
diminished but ghosting was there too.

I attach here a screenshot from DVDSP simulator window.
interlaced screenshot sample

I dont know FCP compression and settings so well, and i think i made some mistakes...
I use mac 10.5.8 Leopard on POWERpc with FCPStudio 7.

Is it my sequence and transcoding procedure wrong or is it compressor and low Mbps
settings ?

Can you suggest me howto
(a) make a proper transcoding workflow and sequence to edit MPG footage with FCP
(b) output and convert avoiding the Ghost images for DVDSP.

How all stared. A footbal fan, brought some MPG files from a sony hdd camcorder, Dsr Sr58.
It has split scenes saved as MPG files which i transcoded to prores and imported in prores444
sequence in FCP to edit.

footage is handheld and has shaky parts too when they pan for most of the teams fiesta.

the DSR sr58 does not seem to be an HD camcorder, and i assume, despite the fact
it has a 16:9 LCD records 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic. I have attached an image
of the folder names i get when i plug the camera via usb on the camcorder.
hdd camcorder directory structure

frame rate recorded by this camera, i believe it is INTERLACED 25fps. I see evident lines on my mac @ playback.
I need to burn PAL SD DVD at the end.

When i open a file in MPEG streamclip and export suggests 1024x576 frame size unscaled.
However, when i open it in QT shows 720x404.

I firstly used MPEG streamclip and exported to QT making 2 versions
(a) Photo JPG compressor codec @ 80 quality
(b) Prores444 @ 70 Quality.

I did not Deinterlaced in the transcoding stage at all.

I then opened (a) in FCP and i saw i needed to render all clips inc audio
I exported to mov. files are huge. when i make m2v files are 2GB each.

i tried (b) and saw i needed to render the clips again. The m2v files are about 2.2GB each
and there is NO way to bring the quality slider down in FCP clip settings. Seems locked to 100%.

So...

I run MPEGstreamclip again, and re-exported the huge QT files with H264, quality 65, limit bit rate= 4Mbps.
I got a QT file approx 1,4 MB.

I uses compressor to make m2v files again, using LOW bitrate settings to shrink the size further.
I used
one pass vbr Best,
motion estimation = good
min bit rate= 3,7 Mbps
max= 6,4 Mbps

All went ok. BUT....
after importing in DVDSP, adding footage, burn, and play back on TV PAL, i see ghosting whenever there is panning
in the movie.

Customer does not want me to cut the shaky footage.
So... I abandoned temporarily and ask for any help here.

thanks :D

TV Broadcast using FCP7? (8 replies)

I run a small public access TV station housed in an art center in Carson City, NV.

Here is my dilemma.

When we first set up for broadcast, 5 years ago, the only (or best or most affordable) piece of equipment to run 2-5 cameras straight into a video input application and be able to switch between cameras, with 2-5 separate audio inputs as well, was the New Tek VT4, we upgraded to VT5 a few years back. We can key out the background and film directly on to the hard drive, switching to the built in Speed Edit app. quite easily to finish and output. We can also send our signal straight to our broadcast system, a Rushworks Multizone PC (cough, cough).

I am a MAC snob. The computer we have New Tek on is failing, or it could be the application, but more likely the computer. We have two MAC towers, both substantial in power and hard drive space. My feeling is I should switch to one of these and use FCP7 or 10, however I do not know if either of those apps will do what I need as far as multi cam input goes. And what type of hardware I'd need to make it happen.

Are any of you familiar with using FCP in this capacity? Do you know some one who is using it in such a manner that I could talk to and pick their brains?

The Mayor wishes to start using our Performance Hall that is above our studio for overflow government meetings since we can broadcast live from this location. I need to solve this little problem we have of the computer (or the application) shutting down willy nilly. Just would not do to have a meeting going out live and have the computer stop working. I realize a MAC could do this too, but a lot less likely and of course a new PC could take care of the problem as well, maybe.

Anyway, do you have any ideas, solutions?

The station does not have FCP 7 or 10 yet. Did I mention we are public access? No money=no new apps. But the city is ready to pay what is needed to get overflow into my building. We can go from FCP6 to an upgrade of FCP7.

Thank you SO much, Darla Bayer dbayer@bactv.org

7toX App Translates Final Cut Pro 7 Projects to Final Cut Pro X (no replies)

Burbank, CA (Jan 31, 2012) – Intelligent Assistance, Inc. today announced the release of 7toX for Final Cut Pro, a lightweight application for translating Final Cut Pro 7 projects to Final Cut Pro X. The application is available from the Mac App Store™ for $9.99 (US).

“7toX uses the robust XML in Final Cut Pro X to deliver the industry’s highest fidelity translation of projects from Final Cut Pro 7,” said Philip Hodgetts, CEO of Intelligent Assistance. “For just $9.99, editors can quickly and easily move their legacy projects to the revolutionary new Final Cut Pro X.”

7toX for Final Cut Pro translates Final Cut Pro 7 Bins to Keyword Collections in Final Cut Pro X, and converts Sequences to Compound Clips that can be easily browsed and edited. In addition, all metadata and log notes from Final Cut Pro 7 are migrated to Final Cut Pro X.

As part of the conversion, all motion tab settings and keyframes are translated into equivalent parameters in Final Cut Pro X. Layers from Photoshop files are properly preserved, and more than 30 Transitions and 70 Filters are matched and applied — with detailed reporting in context in the Magnetic Timeline of Final Cut Pro X. 7toX also allows editors to migrate their Final Cut Pro 7 multicam projects to the latest version of Final Cut Pro X.

Brand new still in box, professional Canon XA10 video camera WITH 2 extra high capacity batteries, extra charger and car adapter AND high end professional quality Hoya HD Digital UV filter.

Camera has 64 GB internal storage and shoots in native 24 progressive mode as well as 30P and 60i. This is a professional grade camera, even though it is very small and easy to operate. Has two XLR audio inputs. Too many features to put in this post. Just bought it for a project but we had enough cameras so this is just sitting here in the box. Taking a loss but it is not doing any nobody any good sitting here. It needs to be out making movies.

Visit the link below to read more about it but here is a little bit from the Canon Professional Video Camera website:

"The new ultra compact XA10 Professional Camcorder is designed for situations where mobility is critical while shooting. This feature-rich, professional model records Full HD 1080p using an AVCHD codec. The ultimate professional camcorder for run-and-gun shooting, the compact XA10 includes a detachable handle for low-angle shooting and portability. With the handle attached the XA10's functionality is further enhanced with the addition of XLR inputs and an external microphone holder.

A Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens delivers a wide, flexible zoom range (35mm equivalent range 30.4mm-304mm) and smooth, pleasing backgrounds thanks to an 8-blade iris. And an infrared mode allows users to capture video in conditions with little or no ambient light, a situation which would make other camcorders useless. The new XA10 provides the option of recording to a 64GB internal flash drive or two SDXC-compatible card slots and the ability to simultaneously record to two cards at once for instant backup. Portable and packed with professional features, this camcorder will be the model of choice for on-the-go videographers."

To see all of the features, go to the Canon product page here:

Cost $2,000.00 new plus paid another $60 for the two extra high capacity batteries and paid $50 for the filter.

Camera, filter, batteries, extra charger and car lighter plug are all included for $1,795.

Why is it that Apple Color will import, grade, and render 99% of TIFs back to FCP as graded TIFs except for a couple which are rendered as Quicktime movies?

My basic workflow has been:
Convert and replace all graphics/photos/stills to TIFs smaller than 4096x2304, RGB, 8bit in FCP.
Bake and do all the other basic stuff for video.
Send to Color.
Render back to FCP from Color as ProResHQ 1920x1080.

Normally the TIFs are rendered with their new grades as TIFs with their original dimensions (larger than 1920x1080) except for these 3 random ones which are being rendered as ProResHQ 1920x1080.

Any ideas?

Some thoughts about Motion Template installation ... (4 replies)

With legacy versions of FCS it was pretty easy to install filters, generators etc. for all users/accounts on a machine. You even where able to build a nice installer with donation ware like IceBerg without knowing anything about programming.
With X it's a bit more more complicated for all the nice guys/gals who provide the community with nice free Motion Templates. They have to explain exactly how and where to install the template, explain why themes are important. For the happy customer/user it's the same especially if he wants to install the templates for several accounts on the machine - boring and time consuming.
Additionally if a template is only installed for one user and another user will open it, the 'specials' are ignored and famous 'auto-save' will do the rest. So you can spoil a lot in a very short time.
FCS not really had been better, but at least a serious 'second' user was able to make a 'save as'.

So while thinking about those and more things, a built a little app, which allows - both creators and users of custom Motion Templates - to handle the installation easier.

A first beta is available here: [www.spherico.com]

It's called a beta because it's quite far away from what the results of my thoughts are. And there is also no manual, but the app is quite self-explaining. It's not beta in the way what it does. You can install a lot of templates for a lot of users with a few clicks - as long a theme is applied to a template.
The app is free and can be freely distributed with free templates you want to share - like for our famous alex4d.

Regards

Hello,

I've been dealing with a problem for a couple of days and want to double check if my solution is ok.

I've been hired to re-edit a short film from 10 years ago from footage on BetaSP (transferred from 16mm and mini-dv). Unfortunatly, I'm still working on FCP 5. The dub house made a mistake and gave me ProRes files, which I cant' use in FCP 5 (I can import them they need to be rendered). So, I'm converting the QT files, using QT Export (not FCP or Compressor), to DV/DVCPRO-NTSC. Is this OK or do I need to re-transfer the master tapes, or convert using another program? I've done a test and it seems to work OK. Don't know if this will be the best quality.

Cheers,

The Badges at the SF Supermeet had the letter F on a bomb. Because the name has changed. No longer is it the FINAL CUT PRO USER GROUP...now it is the CREATIVE PRO USER GROUP. As it encompasses more than one application.

So now I guess it is the LACPUG...

Even though it's a kind of shameless self advertisement I thought it might be worth to mention. Feel free to remove the post.

There is a new version for my TEP, which includes some full featured free helper apps (with no limitations)
One is the already mentioned XTE app which allows a (sorted by role export) of FCPX titles from an XML to STL. You also can create a chapter list file for Compressor (or other apps).
Another one is called XTI. It allows to convert a STL into an XML which can be read by FCPX.
The third one called Avid Marker Tool allows to convert an Avid marker list text file to a STL with several timing and editing features.

So using the not real free TEP or some of the free conversions of the TEP light version, you can go from a lot of formats into X or the other way round.
Example: you got a .srt file from a translator. This file can be converted by the TEP light version to STL without any limitation (works with a Pro version as well). Then use the XTI app to get these titles into X.
This will work with many other formats as well.
Finally with this combination you can convert about 20 subtitle formats in to fcpxml for free. And it's the only app currently available with does that.

You can download the installer from: [www.spherico.com]
