I meant abandonware in terms of who cares. Your point well taken, though. Not a legal term.

Sure, Nuke, it's on our radar for the future. Very similar, low learning curve for Shake users. Only problem is, the price nukes the budget at the moment. We'll get there sooner than later. Was hoping for a Shake solution in the meantime.
I assume its basically abandonware by now
That's not a legally meaningful term. The closest analogue of Shake's legal status is "out of print." Apple still owns it, they still have the exclusive right to sell it, they're choosing not to. This is all totally legal and entirely normal.

Like I said, Apple licensed out the Shake source code for the astonishingly low price of $50,000 per customer, so tons of shops bought it. They now have the right to do whatever the heck they want with the software, but only internally. That's why it's still taught and used. It's basically like CompTime, except on a larger scale.

If you're in the market for Shake, only not Shake because Shake isn't a product any more, then look at Nuke. If you already know Shake, you can pick up Nuke in about twenty minutes. Nuke 6 is pretty inexpensive at $3,500, and there's two non-paid versions available. You can get an unlimited "Personal Learning Edition" which never expires and which is fully functional but for the watermarked output, and you can also get a 30-day temp license for evaluation purposes.

You can also rent it for $1,400 a quarter if you only need it to do one job.

Yeah, I know its not available new any longer. There are lots of websites though offering Version 4.1.1. downloads, but not the kind of places I'd like to offer up a credit card number to.

Thus my query, if anyone knows of a reliable source....?

Licenses: I assume its basically abandonware by now, for whatever reasons known only to Apple. Such a shame, really. It wouldn't have cost them much at all to at least keep it available as a download. Whole lotta people still using it, schools still teaching it, and lots of 3rd party support. Rants out there galore on that subject.

Or, anyone got a copy to sell?

I just imported HDV footage using the HQ codec. It plays fine from my computer within FCP, but the files in the capture scratch show up as text files. Any idea why these are showing up as text files?

Common wisdom would be to use the highest shutter speed possible. However, the XDCam is not that great at all for fast action, much less low-flying pictures over water and trees, even in the 35Mb/s mode.

But, even more important for heli shooting is the mount, the bird, and the pilot. Even more important than all of that is SAFETY (yep, yelling that out loud).

Seriously man, it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to do heli shooting. You need to be asking yourself questions like how good is the pilot, what are the limitations on the helicopter (especially weight and speed), what mount are you using, who's going to install it and are they experienced in its operation, where is the sun, what direction is the wind blowing, where might there be crosswinds/downwinds, what is the air temperature, how long can you stay airborne, how often do you need to refuel, are you and all gear and all other passengers insured, etc etc etc etc.?

If I were the producer knowing that you'd never done this before, I'd be verrrrry concerned. Not trying to turn you off, but be totally aware that it is all very complex and potentially even dangerous for the uninitiated. So, worry about that stuff first, and then your camera and shutter speed later.

Post some more specifics about the above to put everyone's mind at ease, then you'll get some better advice.

I've been given the exciting and challenging job of shooting from a chopper next week using my Sony PMW EX1. I'm shooting NTSC and either 1080/60i or 720/30p.
Its my first time doing something like this and i'm really anxious about screwing up the shot by not using the right shutter speed. We're gonna be flying low to the ocean and rain forests. Does anyone have any advise on shutter speed when moving quickly? And does it relate to whether i'm shooting 1080/60i or 720/30p?

Thanks for your help folk.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

You probably won't spot the difference if it goes to 35. By the time you record a neg, then make an IP, then an IN, then your release print(s), you've have lost the extra resolution the 1080 material had anyway. It varies depending on stock and stuff, but the rule of thumb is that a 35mm print — not negative — when projected in a typical theater has more-or-less the same resolution as 720p. Tons more dynamic range, obviously, but in terms of sheer resolving power, a theatrical screening is less than you might suppose.

You might be able to spot the difference on an HDTV, though, since the 1080 material would be full-resolution and the 720 would be up-scaled. Again, it really depends on your own personal eyeballs. I don't like cutting between 1080 and 720 when I'm in the editing room two feet from my monitor, but from my couch at home I might not even notice.

Hm, that's an interesting point about the 720p60 material looking soft. I know for a fact they aren't thinking about that, so I'll mention it. I do think they intend for this piece to have a theatrical run, so that's important to consider.

These here a'days, I'd say something like a Bravia, or whatever the popular consumer model is lately. Just a totally bog-standard Best Buy special, taken out of the box and not adjusted at all. Most people leave their TVs at the factory settings, and the goal here is to see what your spot (or whatever) looks like on the average TV.

It's not mandatory. It's something I like to do when I have the option, though.

Hi guys,

I'd say $2K is realistic for a budget. So the Panasonic Plasma A then? Cool, I'll look it up. However, if I want to go crazy, get the top of the line, are there places in LA (I'm new to the area) where I can rent a top-end monitor for a couple weeks?

In terms of what I'm doing, it's the "these shots need sweetening" (proper value range, color balance, sharpness if it needs a little filter boost), not "major creative adjustments" (making blue red, wacky sci-fi effects/filters, massive green screen stuff). Although...I will be doing some layering/compositing here and there to quench the color in a corner of an image while bringing something out in the larger area of the frame.

The consumer-grade TV sidekick makes sense to me...but do you mean a typical LCD 16:9 thingy that people are getting nowadays, or an older CRT? Or both? I fully understand the logic here. It's like mixing audio on a 128-channel board, but then listening to it on a crappy jambox too to hear 'how some folks will hear it'.

Thanks!

I thought I would add that a Stardom SohoTANK ST8 16TB paired with an ATTO R380 card sells for about $4999.00 through most dealers. Firm pricing with the ATTO card had not been announced at the time of our original press release.

So to put this in perspective, the products cost is about 3K less than other similiar solutions out there with more speed & a better warranty, out the door.

This product has also been tested & validated by Blackmagic Design as well as through many discriminating dealers across the US.

Anyone needing a list of dealers in their area, please contact me for further details. This product comes with a 2 year warranty standard.
