there's one small thing:
i do have smooth playback,
but i now all the options for the non-"main" screen preview the same.
used to be a difference between Preview, Full Screen & Raw,
now they all play full screen.

not a big deal for me.
Sounds like we'll see a 7.0.1.1 release soon...
i just got a new Software Update notification:

"Pro Applications Update 2009-01 addresses general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, and Logic Studio."

it's relatively small,
i downloaded only and had a look,
sure enough, there is a new VideoOutSupport.pkg in there.

i'm pretty sure this is the official fix.

very cool!

thanks, Shane, it works!

i managed to get to that file on the FCP7 install disc.
here's what to do:

Load up your Final Cut Studio Install disk,
or if you've made a disk image (good idea) access that.

Inside that, notice that the "Instal Final Cut Studio" package is actually an Alias,
so right-click on that and "Show Original"

You'll be taken to a folder called "Installer" inside of which is another folder called "Packages"

Inside the Packages folder locate the VideoOutSupport.pkg,
right-click on it, and "Show Package Contents"

Inside the Contents folder, locate the Archive.paz.gz file.
Drag it to the desktop, and double click on it to un-zip it.

This will create a folder called "Library"
Open it, go to the QuickTime folder inside it,
and there you will find the file "DesktopVideoout.component"

Put this file in Macintosh HD > Library >QuickTime,
replacing the similarly named file there.

Digital Cinema Desktop Preview should now work.

cheers,
nick

I have exactly the same problem as the OP.

7.0 worked perfectly. Installed the Pro Apps update to FCP 7.0.1 now Desktop Preview is basically useless on my second monitor.

Tested with DV, DVCPRO, HDV and ProRes footage, all reacted differently but all dropped frames and stuttered. Turning mirroring off only displays a still frame in both Cinema Preview and the canvas.

Trashed prefs for all pro apps with the Digital Rebellion util, didn't help.

Weird thing is, it works on my primary display. Also, if I drag the Canvas window onto my second display, that works perfectly too. Only when I use my second display as a Cinema Desktop Preview does it go to crap.

I have to reinstall until this issue gets worked out. Ugh.
maybe it's only a problem in PAL do you think?
maybe i was being a bit flippant.
i've been working with both PAL and NTSC footage,
so i don't think it's a PAL- only issue.
although it could have something to do with MAGNETISM (cue spooky theremin music)

[quote="Other Final Cut Pro fixes include one where a Desktop Cinema Display Preview would tear the bottom of an image when using a Cinema Display with a MacBook Pro"
maybe that 'fix' is part of our problem?]
you'd think so, wouldn't you,
but not many others have reported this, as far as i can tell.

i also have a BackMagic Intensity pro card in my machine.
i'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

do you have any other hardware?

very weird! usually a bug like this one is reported all over the forums, but i haven't found a thing on it except your post. maybe it's only a problem in PAL do you think? yes, what on earth have we done in australia to deserve this!

i reinstalled 7.00 on the suite that was updated to 7.01 after getting freaked out by the lagging, so i didn't spend enough time on it to find other problems.

the release notes for the 7.0.1 update says this:

"Other Final Cut Pro fixes include one where a Desktop Cinema Display Preview would tear the bottom of an image when using a Cinema Display with a MacBook Pro" (source:macworld)

maybe that 'fix' is part of our problem? but i can only speculate. personally i never noticed a tear when using my macbook, however it's the mac pro that i upgraded and encountered clunky playback problem with.

well i'm staying well clear of 7.0.1 that's for sure. thanks for posting the warning, here's hoping other people in the southern hemisphere find it before updating.

cheers.

hey, simon.
maybe it affects people in the southern hemisphere :)

i ALSO had another problem, where i couldn't CAPTURE.
neither camera or deck were recognised.
hopped over to my iMac, and captured there.

this could be non-related??
haven't really gotten to the bottom of it yet.
i'm wondering though if it's the pro apps update and not fcp 7.0.
hard to say as the ProAps update contained 7.01,
i see them as one and the same.
you think it's some other conflict?

hi nick,

same thing happened for me - staggering playback on the digital cinema desktop preview. reverted back to 7.0 and it was working as per normal.

i'm wondering though if it's the pro apps update and not fcp 7.0.1.

cheers,

I have the same issue (began with 7.0 and not solved yet). Also, if I show current frame, it will show a still on the Preview Monitor. When I press the space bar to continue playback, it flips the image up-side down.
