I created my project in FCP using a pristine logo provided by the client. I did some simple Boris titles (don't turn your noses up -- it was just a phone number and two words). Anyway, I exported using compressor and these were my settings:

DVD - best quality 90 minutes 16:9 - Mpeg 2 with dolby audio.

The video looks okay, in DVD Studio, but the titles and logo are TERRIBLE! They look fine in FCP, but yucky upon compression. Any suggestions for what I could do to improve the look of these?

FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5 make simple iDVD like Blu-ray video discs. As others mentioned. DVD Studio Pro can't author.

If you're looking for external burner I believe Buffalo 8x got the best review from Macworld because it was fast and USB worked reliably with Toast at almost the same speed as firewire. I'd like to see the 12x reviews complete with burn times with specific good quality media.

If you have multiple computers, an external drive might make more sense. Internal you have to make sure you have the correct cabling for your specific MacPro as I believe there have been changes.

My main concern is data backup though. My corporate clients still ask for DVD even though I only shoot HD. I also give them HD files versions (even YouTube and Vimeo allow for 1080p now).

One of the workflows to get a Blu Ray disc, is to encode a Blu Ray compatible stream in Compressor and author that in a Blu Ray authoring software (eg. Encore or Toast).

SD DVD varying quality on different screens

Hi,

I made an SD DVD of all of my projects. For simplicity's sake, and to save time, I did it in iDVD7 on Professional Quality, putting all original Quicktime Exports into it (Among these was a project shot on HDV, XDCAM, DVCAM.) I also did tests in DVD Studio Pro.

The project plays and looks great on my 23" Apple Cinema Display and my Samsung 1080i flatscreen with OPPO Blueray player. However, I tried it on my friend's Vizio 60" flatscreen with Toshiba DVD player and the HDV and XDCAM didn't look as well. I got weird pixelization/digital blotches in the dark areas of the frame. Playing it on the same TV using a PS3 gave better outcome, though some pixelization in dark areas. All players have the upres feature on them.

Thinking it might be my encoding, I did various other tests on the the HDV ad XDCAM footage with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro: down conversion with and without compression, various compressors, etc. I had mixed outcomes.

An editor friend proposed that some flatscreens are not calibrated correctly the way most screens are at production companies and, generally, in the industry.

THE QUESTION: What makes the HDV and XDCAM footage on my SD DVD look good on some screens/players and bad on others?

Any ideas and input are welcome. The tech side isn't my foray, so I am very curious in seeing what people think. If anyone can propose other encoding settings for more consistent quality, please let me know.

Thanks,
M

Any recommendations for an external? I am using a mac quad core tower.
Also what software burns bluray? I dont think the idvd can do that.

If your disc start up item is the track, which plays when playback starts, what happens when you press the menu button?

Or is this happening when you begin playback, get to the menu, press play, go back to the menu when the track finishes...and then use the Menu button?

Do you have the end jump for the track set to be the track?

the more info you give, the easier it will be to help sort out why it is happening.

Tv Vet - make sure that your audio is an AC3 file, and not .aiff. What you describe suggests that your error occurs when audio is present, and the bit rate for your video is on the high side. If you use .aiff audio you will max out the bit rate, and you'll get the rather confusing 'video bitrate too high' error... when it is in fact the audio that is pushing things over the top.

If you encode your audio to AC3 (Dolby Digital) and use a standard stereo file, you can keep the bitrate down to 192kbps... that's kb not mb... heck of a difference and no perceptible loss in audio quality for the vast majority of people.

Use Compressor to create your AC3, and set the dialog normalization setting to -31db (press return after typing it in to ensure it 'sticks'). This will ensure your audio comes out sounding the same as it went in with no attenuation for the dialogue sections.

How did you find this compression error. Is there a log in Compressor that tells that, or did you just see the error in the Mp2 file?
I have one I've been trying to build for a week, have encoded 3 times at successively lower bit rates, and it gets 83% into the build and throws the VBR too high error. Does that mean it is at a particular spot since I've encoded 3 times, and it always happens at that point?
I'm doing a dual angle DVD of 42 minutes (84 total for the 2 mp2 streams), 1 subtitle stream (11 subtitles), and an .ac3 audio stream at 192. I've been authoring these same type DVDs 3 or 4 times a year for about 3 years, and have never had a single problem. In fact just successfully authored act 1 of this show 2 days before I tried to build this one.
I've checked the FCP time line to make sure there are exact cut points in both video tracks, and they are all exact.
I also tried taking the audio stream out and leaving the 2 video streams and the DVD builds fine. I took one video stream out and left the audio and one video and it worked fine.
The project is only 3.9 gb encoded at 6.0/7.8 so it's not a size issue.

I'm at a loss to explain this and none of my other FCP friends have run into this problem.
Please help!

Sounds like going from FCP timeline out to the DVD recorder is not the best way.

Use Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. DVD recorders were not designed for flawless real-time output, and they are much, much more prone to not playing at all or playing back with problems. I've received many a disc that was created this way and will not behave properly. With a proper DVD project, you can also burn discs much faster after the initial encoding, and the discs will be more consistent.

Hi,

Which would result in a better quality DVD (DV footage in 4:3, no menus):

1. Bring my QT file into Compressor for MPEG 2 and then DVD Studio Pro

2. Using Print to Video from FCP timeline, firewire to my deck, then into a set-top DVD recorder.

Thanks for any input.

I have the same problem. The error code in DVDStudio 3 Log says:

In Build
"Encoding Assets...
Error while encoding file:/Volumes/G-DRIVE 1/LONDON 25/DVD 2010/Sequence 1

Build cancelled
Formatting finished.
Building was not successful. See log."

In Encode
"Encoding file Sequence 1.
Encoding of Sequence 1 failed with error: -2"

I tried this second time and it happened again. The first time it happened at around 39% of "Build & Format" completion. It seemed like it happened at the almost end of encoding before formatting. I thought it was a project name or disc name, so I changed it and it didn't do it. Please help

Thanks,
Jay

upgrade OS now DSP errors

Ok, new issue, but with a different computer. I upgraded the OS to 10.5.8 on this particular computer & now DSP 4.0.3 has some weird happenings. Like, during a build, once it hits a certain point such as rendering a menu, it just cycles there with no progress. Another weird thing is that when I try to save it says "you cannot save this project", but if I do a "save as" it will let me overwrite it. I'm not on an Intel mac, so my suspicion is that there's a clash between 4.0.3, the OS & non-intel. Throw me some knowledge!

Pan and scan is not a compression function, but a description of how the video will look on different sized screens if it is applied. It's like saying letterbox... which isn't a video compression either.

If you've shot on DV (in PAL, I take it) then use FCP to edit the footage. Export to Compressor and use an appropriate compression preset to convert your DV material to MPEG2, and the audio to AC3. Use these files in DVDSP, not the DV.

When you set up your DVDSP project, choose the aspect ratio to suit your footage - 4:3 or 16:9. You can then start to think about how your footage will look if shown on a TV of the other size and shape... i.e. if you shot 4:3 and create a 4:3 disc, what should happen when it is shown on a 16:9 screen? This is where pan&scan comes in.

Have a look in the DVDSP manual, chapter 2, page 52. It explains it all there rather well.

Re: Directors Commentary

You add a second audio track, and use a 'set up' menu to select the appropriate track to play back.

For example, you have one video track, but two audio tracks. Button 1 on your menu plays the video with audio 1, and button two plays the video with audio 2. You can do this through using button 'conditions' in the property inspector for each button. It's quite easy. You can also do this with scripts, but it is not at all necessary for what you describe.

You might have different footage for the directors commentary, and want this in a second video track. That's fine too - as long as there is space on your DVD. Simply add that as a second track with its own audio and point to it from a menu.
