Greetings Forumites,

I am preparing to burn a 100 minute project. A trial copy to see how things are cooking.
I found a spiffy table on the net that says my little job at 720 x 3,164 mb/min is going to be 316 GB Say WHAT??!

Soooooo Compressor is going to squeeze that onto a 4+ GB disk? Really?
I have never burned anything this big. Typically I have exported a QTmov and then dragged that onto iDVD.

Any basic tips anyone would like to share for my maiden voyage into Compressor?

Basic settings..??
Can I expect a long wait for it to compress? ( running G4 1.25 ghz)

I was anticipating using iDVD, just cause I have used it in the past. I do have
FCP Studio 4 which I guess has Studio Pro on it. At this point I am not building in markers and such. Its just a test to see if cut is making sense to everyone.

Thanks,
Rick

In FCP 7 I used the Share menu to create a DVD from my sequence, but then I closed it out to check the DVD in a TV DVD player. It worked fine. But now I want to burn a few more DVD's without waiting the 3 hours for FCP to transcode the sequence all over again. The DVD media is still on my hard drive (one .m2v file and one .ac3 file) from when FCP created it. What's the quickest and easiest way to combine these files into a watchable movie and burn them to a disc for use in a TV DVD player? (I don't have Toast, only iDVD and DVD Studio Pro which I've never used.)

First: you should post this in the DVD Studio Pro forum. This one is mostly for FCP.

Now: DVDSpro can make two types of discs: a DVD which is standard definition, 720x480 (which can also be anamorphic, 16:9 widescreen), or an HD DVD (the dead format that Blu Ray killed). Which kind of disc do you want to make? Right now you have a standard DVD, and you cannot change that setup once you've built your project; you can't change the track size or scale it up to HD, doesn't work that way. It's one or the other, never both at the same time.

(Keep in mind that HDDVDs only play in Macs and the few remaining HDDVD players. If you wanna make a BluRay and you have a BR burner then you can do that directly from FCP7)

As for your image quality, we don't know what's happening until we know more about your settings -- what format was your source file and what settings did you use for the MPEG-2 conversion? And keep in mind too that the Simulation mode is showing you the DVD output on your computer monitor, which is not the most accurate way to judge video output. It may be that it looks fine on a TV - can you afford to burn a test disc and try it out on a regular DVD player hooked up to a TV?

I'm working in DVD Studio Pro. When I "simulate" the movie about to be burned to DVD, the image quality is poor. When I try to change the resolution of the track from 720x480i to 1920x1080, the track is locked on 720x480i and will not allow me to change to any other options. I think this is what is causing the image quality in "Simulate" to be poor. What can I do to fix the image quality? Does the track have to go through Compressor again (took 3 hours)? Thanks!

I didn't have a problem with DVD Studio in FCP5, but this updated version is giving me fits:

I compressed 20 minute clips as Mpeg-2 in FCP6, using Compressor,
and did the audio in Dolby (also using Compressor). (AC3 files)

Then I opened DVD Studio Pro (in Final Cut Pro 6) and
I can import the video into the timeline of DVD STudio Pro,
but the audio won't go in.
Every time I click and drag it, the timeline won't accept it.

I tried using iDVD, but it can't find any of the media.

Hi all have come across this error, and believe I have successfully fixed this problem after many hrs of trying every possibility.

What I have found that fixed this problem for me was,
Remove all spaces or replace with underscore in naming of movie files before placing in DVD Pro session.
example the files where:
SD Def prog dv pal.mov
Rename as:
SDDefprogdvpal.mov
(or underscore)
SD_Def_prog_dv_pal.mov

Issues I thought it was:
naming was to long, to many characters,
one of the names of video was:
Std def look at Apple Pro Res 422.mov

After closing gaps to:
StddeflookatAppleProRes422.mov

The build was successful.

9mbs per sec, one pass works fine.
The DVD pro session was a CODEC test
so it was a mixture of files exported from compressor in standard DEF 16:9,
DVPAL progressive
DVPAL interlaced
AppleProRes422
8bit_uncompressed
DVD_std_def.m2v (one pass 9mbps)

So please post back if this fixes your problem,
or re-create the error with a new session DVD Pro
and wording of movie/video file has more than 3 gaps
"SD Def prog dv pal.mov"

Also for every new DVD Pro session setup a new encoding folder, and build folder can be the same.

By default, DVD Studio Pro (DVDSP) uses One-Pass VBR encoding, with "Better" motion estimation, with an average bit rate of 4 Mbps and a maximum bit rate of 7 Mbps. So, these default settings (for the integrated MPEG-2 encoder in DVDSP) are somewhat conservative and may not work well with all of your clips.

Using Compressor, you get more options, including frame controls, with which to optimize your MPEG-2 encoding.

You can change the settings for the integrated encoder in DVDSP under the Encoder tab of the DVDSP preferences. In your specific case, the Two-Pass VBR and "Best" motion estimation settings in the DVDSP Encoder preferences may help make things look better.

Most people recommend using Compressor because there are more quality-related options and you can use distributed processing to speed up your jobs.

I'm not sure what direction to come at this problem from. I tried to burn a DVD with about 15 MOVs Apple ProRes 422 ranging from :20 to :35 TRT. The video was shaky and twitchy as moments where there were fast speed changes. I finally used compressor and converted them to m2vs and it seemed to work for most of the videos. Is this a problem where DVD SP is over-compressing my clips? They take up very little disc capacity. How can I prevent this problem in the future?

hi

ive just finished editing a corporate with some video co pilot 'extension' animations/graphics in it. They are basically some grey swirly lines growing onto the screen around some of the video. They last a couple of seconds. they look absolutely great on the timeline in fcp. trouble is, when i take the project into dvd studio pro and play it the 'extensions' that move up and down the screen have all been squashed so now they begin a third of the way from the edge of the screen and do not reach the top.

i first thought this was an aspect ratio problem so i tried burning using letterbox, pan and scan and letterbox & pan and scan. no luck at all. the up and down extensions are still squashed...can anyone help please.

either exporting or dvd sp has done something odd to my effects...

regards

UPDATE: I deleted the 'problem' track then recreated it, moving it to the bottom of the Tracks list. The 'Track 1' that's just a slug with an end jump is at the top position. I did a new Build and deleted the previous build.

It still defaults to the same track when resuming, nothing has changed!!

This is really quirky behavior; could my project file be corrupted? It seems like it's stuck on the same track listing no matter how much I move them around. This project file (my reel) has been updated and resaved several times, wonder if certain things are still referencing older versions somehow. Any other way to 'clear' the project other than a fresh Build (or starting from scratch?)

EDIT - just saw your post Hal. First Play is set to the Main Menu. To be clear, this behavior only happens after the STOP button is pushed twice, not on initial disc insert. I've verified it in a couple DVD players, though it works fine on my MBPro.

What have you got set as the first play item?

Dumping the build folder is not a bad thing to do when you change anything in your project - or simply specify a new build folder... you shouldn't need to re-create the entire disc (quite a chore, at any rate).

Hi Hal,

I tried that workaround -- added a new "track 1" to the top of the list in the Outline pane and set it to end jump to the Main menu. But that same previous track keeps playing.

I'm wondering if I need to dump the whole BUILD folder and start fresh, maybe delete the track that keeps playing and re-create it for good measure?

Am I alone in thinking that DVD Studio Pro (or perhaps Compressor) need to do better at down-converting and encoding our HD content for the creation of SD DVDs? After banging away at a tiny project for more than a week using Final Cut Studio, the results I've experienced are disappointing -- and apparently accepted by the masses with "that's as good as it gets" type comments. Come on Apple. You can do better!

Thanks so much for this feedback. You taught me something new (to add to the new stuff already cramming my head): that the DVDSP encoding settings don't apply to what I'm doing. I'm already basically following your instructions to that point. I'd better check what I've set under encoding to make sure I'm not messing up.

My video has a LOT of motion. Not much in the way of zooming and no panning, but there's plenty of action in front of the camera, not the least of which is tree leaves in an orchard blowing in the wind. (The YouTube video I linked to above shows what I mean.) I guess that's screwing up the compression.

I do WANT the flexibility of Final Cut Studio Pro. But boy, the results on DVD are just so disappointing. I'm trying to put together a tour video for resale (the cherry video is a practice project) and I simply can't bring myself to sell something with this kind of quality. Am I just being picky? Maybe. But when I compare source video footage to the final DVD -- both played on the SAME television -- I wonder why the hell I shot in HD.

Maybe that's the real question: should I be shooting in SD? I guess I'll try that for my next video.

Thanks again for your help. Any more suggestions would certainly be welcome.

Basically, you have to go from 1080i to a standard def format. You might be able to down-convert from the camera (some Sony's do this, but possibly only the higher range Z1/Z5, etc) or you can do this in Compressor. Go from FCP directly into Compressor, choose any SD template for the encode (120 mins, 90 mins, etc) and use this as a start point. Ensure you go to MPEG2 and AC3 audio only, and keep the bitrate below 7.5Mbps for the video. Use the tools in compressor to fine tune the encoding - it's impossible to say what settings you need, so much depends on your footage (the amount of movement, the colour changes, pans, fades, zooms and so on). Try using 2 pass VBR settings, and set the motion estimation to 'better', not 'best'. If it comes out a bit soft, try it at 'best'.

You would do well to take a short section - 30 seconds - and work with that to find the best encode settings. This could take repeated attempts, and there is a lot to learn about compression... it isn't a simple process.

These files will then import into DVDSP where you can author the disc. The encoding settings in DVDSP are to deal with anything that isn't MPEG2 format when you go to build the disc. Don't be tempted into thinking it is an alternative compressor... it *is* able to compress, but it won't do as good a job as compressor. BAsically, ignore them as long as you encode everything you use before you go to DVDSP.

So... why did iDVD look good? Because it is set up very well, and uses a predefined compression profile that you and I do not have access to, and cannot change. It is very well set up, and gives a great result.

Why did you pay for FCS? It gives you far, far more freedom and flexibility to edit and author as you want to do, not as someone else has decided.

If you prefer iDVD, great - it's a cool app. If you want to have access to a lot more features when building a DVD, such as creating playlists, manipulating the navigation, creating easter eggs, using your own designs and graphics, and much more... you need DVDSP. It's a choice only you can make, and DVDSP isn't necessarily the right choice for you.

The other consideration is that you wanted to edit using FCP... and DVDSP is just another tool in the box when you get FCP. You don't have to use it, but it is there for when you do want to.

I would guess the track it goes to is the one listed at the top of the tracks in the outline view. There is nothing you can do except put a different track there.

What would you like it to do? If you want to see a menu, try putting a short track of black slug (about a second long) and setting the end jump to the main menu. Position that at the top of the list and see if that gets around it.
