I have 2 RAID "1" arrays - a work unit (1 TB) and a backup only unit (3 TB). I use Time Machine built into the Mac OS - works perfectly and I have redundant backup all around.

Disagree with Ben...
TGA files support 8,15,16,24,32 bit depths.
Targa with alpha is 32-Bit (24 bit + 8 bit for the Alpha Channel).
This is the best format out of a 3D app IMHO. Then compile into a Prores 4444 file for maximal color retention.

That's a brilliant solution Mike. I'll tell you...the best thing I EVER did was order my last Macbook Pro with the smokin' fast Apple 512 GB SSD (haven't missed a tower for years). I would never use anything else as a boot drive other than an SSD.

Thank you Mike. This is actually the first professional collaboration between me and my 14 year old son Cameron. He did the artwork (Illustrator CS 5.5) that I incorporated onto the wall (C4D) in the first scene / composition! A Silver Telly @ 14 years old! Proud Papa )

Sounds too familiar...Apple also said that FCPX was going to "blow us away". It blew us away alright...right into the Adobe / Avid camps.

I am, how do you say, pissed off :
* MBP - No 17"
* MBP eliminates FW800
* No onboard DVD
* No ExpressCard 34 Port
* RAM is built-in
* New Magsafe 2 not compatible with Magsafe plug - need adapter for 27" Cinemascreen.
* splits the only 2 USB ports (yes...only 2) to opposite sides of the machine so my Cinemascreen is not usable without another adapter.

(in my experience) There is no "standard" really...best to ask each station you are sending to. -6 db I have only sent out for internet play - way too hot for TV stations. -12 is too hot for some stations. I used to ship -20 on request to certain stations for broadcast TV. They will tell you what "format" as well (example: 48k/16bit/Stereo/.aif). Also some stations take 720p P

The answer is "or what" for me...been that way for over 4 years now.
"laptop editing" does not always mean "on the lap" (unless you are on a plane / in an airport / hotel lobby / or somewhere there is no table) . I have been working on the latest MBP every year for quite a while now with the greatest success (my latest one rivals my 8-Core MacPro tower at the stud

That is in Photoshop...but don't count on it in video as it is computationally intensive per frame:
BTW...this is NOT for "out of focus" shots...this is for MOTION BLURRED shots (there is a difference). Adobe's new tech on this uses what's called the "blur kernel" to restore images.
"...the key element in the unblurring feature is the program?s intensive comput

I am under warranty with the VR2 so it's CalDigit sleds. I have not had to change out my original VR sleds yet (knocking wood...NOW) as they have been rock solid for years. I wouldn't use anything else at this point. Kicks a$$.

Loren,
The laptop is one screen. I have a 27" Cinema Display on the other side. The last thing it feels like is "laptop editing". And wherever I go to work I find a secondary screen to confiscate (bag full of adapters)

I do not invest in MacPros anymore as the technology is looking like support is waning. I have been working full time from the latest MBP since my old Quad blew up a few years ago...and never looked back. External (thunderbolt) portability is the future. Breakout thunderbolt chassis are the new speedy solutions. Hardware RAIDs are dead around here as well - have not used one of those since my Sle

My 2 cents...
Benefits of the CalDigit VR2 = stability / confidence / dependability / ease of drive swapping / repairability (fan replacement easy) / cost efficiency
I bought the VR2 (6TB unit) - running it in RAID "0" so I have 3TB of FAST mirrored protected dependable storage. I am still running an old VR (2 TB) unit that has been rock solid for years. I bought a 6TB RAID from O

QuoteBesides increasing my skill set (which I attempt to daily), what else can one do to book a client at the higher rate we deserve?
My 2 cents...
There is no magic pill. You only deserve and earn higher rates by offering more in your skillset (don't "attempt" to increase it...DO IT), having an exemplary work ethic and having a killer Demo Reel (updated every few months)...period.

Ah... I see..."Kill Fee"?? That's a bit harsh - never heard it referred to that way...ever is why the confusion. There is no "cancellation fee"...that is not what I am talking about. I am talking about industry respect for an Artist's time. You are booked for your skills so whether you work or not you get paid. That is a "Booking". That means you turn down jobs that

99% of the time I negotiate a flat project fee with 3 revisions built in. After that, it's $750 per day for UP TO 8 hours (that means 1 to 8 hours is booked @ $750).
I do not book "actual work time" like punching a clock. I am booking my time to one client so that another client cannot book me at the same time. If you book time and a client cancels, should he pay you? HELL YES. You c

I have to agree here. "Offline" and "Finishing" are very old school mentalities and are not positions held in my market. If you cannot do "soup to nuts", you work less / go hungry.
Still...I am going to learn Smoke and add that jackhammer to my Compositing / 3D / Editing toolbelt...NOT because I am looking for a "finishing" tool...but because it is a ful

Stay away from large pics in FCP...period. Use Motion or even better After Effects if you have it and animate 3D position rather than scale. The render is cleaner and a hell of a lot faster.
