Mark: Please take this a respecful opinion and not a rebuttal or anything.
But I really disagree with this widespread notion about serifed typefaces. IMO, it's something that became true because of repetition, not because of the actual truth in it.
It's partially true and thus also partially false.
Most serif fonts were designed for high resolution printed output at 600 dpi, which is much mu

An iMac is a Mac Mini with a built-in monitor and a better graphics card. Don't get me wrong. The display is gorgeous and the graphics card... well, you can think about it like insurance: you make sure you will be able to run the next versions of FCS for some time.
However, this is just me, let's see it this way: The iMac is very similar to a MacBook Pro in terms of expansion, even a bit less (n

Troy: just re-installing won't be enough, since Mac OS X notices receipt files as evidence that you have something or not. If the Installer finds the receipt, it won't re-install anything. It's important that you wipe those out.

Hello, Filmman.
It's really easy, but as it happens to all of us at some point, you're probably a bit frustrated right now and can't see it. Someday we will laugh about it
Meanwhile, I think your main problem must be this and just this. When Motion starts, it just hides some of the most important windows. So, it's probably just a matter of making sure they are there.
Let's see.

I don't want to join just to make depressing remarks, but in the last few years I got the impression NLE software is becoming the most conservative segment among visual applications (Photoshop probably being the very worst case). FCP is no worse in this regard. In fact, it's probably better in this area than the others. But seriously, the core creative toolset haven't changed that much since 1999

What are you going to do with the clips?
If you're going to edit them on a timeline (or timelines), the procedures Derek and I discribed will allow you to apply effects only ONCE. If you're not going to edit them on a timeline, please let us know what are you going to do with them.

$2800 for the MacBook Pro, John?
I completely respect your opinion. But we want to encourage Jamie, don't we?
Of course, tastes are tastes, but the 17" MBP is not only much more expensive. The main problem, it's only portable in the sense of going from work desk to home desk with it in a car, not "porting" it. I wouldn't want to go around with one, and a lot of friends who got on

Hello, Btyrrel.
I don't see layered menus and drop zones as something you use together.
In fact, layered menus and even customer overlay maps are things you use when you want to bypass DVD Studio Pro's (quite understandably) simple design capabilities and want to go with the flexibility a specialized tool like Photoshop (for layered menus) or Motion/After Effects (motion menus with custom overl

You can't apply FCP or Motion effects in Compressor 2.
There are a number of ways in which you could quickly apply effects to a lot of clips at the same time.
For example, in FCP a quick way to apply an effect to an entire timeline is to select all clips (command-A) nest them into a new sequence (sequence > nest items) and then apply your desired effects to the nested clip (it will look li

WAV and AIFF are different containers for the same thing, linear PCM audio.
Quicktime supports both so there shouldn't be a difference. I would just go with AIFF, because it's the convention on a Mac. In any case, if there's a problem, you can convert one into the other in seconds.

Hello, Jamie.
I really recommend reading the replies Mike suggests. I wrote what he calls an history lesson but there are a lot of reasons for and against, there.
Basically, when Apple says they don't recommend using a Mac Mini or MacBook for pro apps you could read: we're about to raise the system requirements for Final Cut Studio in the next version. Don't tell us we didn't warn you

I read this week (god knows where, but not in something like Crazy Apple Rumors) that ATI is about to release a version of the X1900 card for the G5. And that they were showing it at SIGGRAPH. So you may get lucky after all. OWC is selling X850s for just $339, but they are for AGP Power Macs only, unfortunately.
Once said that, I'll tell you my opinion about graphics cards and other upgrade opti

Oh, of course it has a timeline (actually, three timelines: a general one, a graph editor for keyframes and animated properties, and an audio specific viewer!). It is in no way limited to one clip.
Motion starts up with a simplified interface, probably to make it less intimidating to begginers. Just click the "Timing" button on the upper right corner and it will reveal the main timeline

Motion (pro apps, actually) installs a Quicktime component that enables FCP (and other applications) to understand Motion project files. Maybe that one is ruined or lost. Re-installing should do it. I suggest deleting any Motion install receipts in your Library folder (so that the installer really re-installs things).

You're right, Jim. What you're doing is really really far from being the best method.
There are two ways in which you could get files from Motion to FCP with the original transparency intact. If you really want to work with Quicktime files, you can export from Motion a QT movie with the Animation codec (the only standard video codec that supports embedding tranparency along the usual color inform

No matter how powerful the graphics card, in my experience the RT thing is only really useful for simple projects. You can still take advantage of it other projects, by using the solo function a lot, ie, RT playback of individual elements rather than the whole thing. The truth is that elaborate motion graphics projects get complex really fast and the whole OpenGL thing becomes less relevant when

You know what, Scott? At least for the tracking property, Motion shows the value as a whole number, but it usually does take the decimal values intro account. If you type a value of 0.6, for example, it will usually behave as desired, but will still show it as 1.0. I say "usually" because sometimes, the whole value sticks when you leave text editing mode. Strange, isn't it? Another rela

It could be worth noting that everyone in this thread voted 3D with cameras as a wanted feature. No excepctions. The second one seems expressions, or some sort of capability to link parameters and perform simple math operations between them. Particularly, the ability to use audio information to drive animation was named several times. Houston? I mean, Cupertino?

While, like Mark says, this could be acomplished in AE with expressions.... the expressions would have to be much more complex than what it seems. First, you would need to measure the length of a text string (Expressions can do that), then try to figure out how to convert that to an useful number you could use to substract from the Object B's position (also doable, but requires quite some testing

Why I am not suprised? Maybe because my "pro" Dual G5 bought some time ago is not good enough for Aperture? System requirements for Apple applications are starting to become almost ridiculous.
A 400 Mhz G4 with 16 MB AGP was good for FCP 5.0 but now a Dual Core Mac Mini is not for 5.1? Heck, the Mac Mini will probably run Maya (when available) and other image creation mega monsters, b

Hey, Dion! Great to see you here.
"Is the primary use of expressions for Parameter Linking? Or are you asking to type in whatever expression you feel like?"
Ideally, it would be great if you could have both. Withmath operations like Peter said (completely agree), but also the with ability to apply parameter behaviors to the sampled values. For example, take position from another prope

Why would it be more applicable on a PC? A Quicktime file is a Quicktime file, regardless of which application created it And for the record, After Effects is a Mac application, was born as a Mac application, took about 7 years for its' first Windows version to come out (3.1) and still works best on Macintosh

Yes, it does clarify. But I don't think is something you do simply by using a plug-in. For simple cases, it's easy: Motion replicators can place (replicate!) series of elements into another element's area. That way, you could place elements inside a bottle, for example. But what you mention is way more sophisticated, because it takes into account the color of the different features on the object

Well, yes, Motion is making a mistake there , but with the best intentions
When you build a RAM preview, Motion tries to take advantage of those already processed bits to speed up rendering. However, some times it doesn't realize that -for instance- you edited text contents.
Luckily, Motion has an option to flush the RAM preview cache. If you modified your project after doing RAM previews, it

JR:
Believe it ot not, if what you want is to import your Motion project into FCP, the best option is not exporting anything at all
Let me explain: The Motion > FCP workflow is designed in such a way, that FCP is able to import and use unrendered Motion projects as if they were clips. Just import your Motion project in FCP. FCP will have to render the project in order to play it back in real
