HD DVD is a dead format. It has been replaced by Blu-ray discs, which can be burned by Compressor, albeit with far less customization than DVDSP offers. If you want extra control when burning Blu-ray discs I would recommend Adobe Encore.

There's a plugin here:
Or alternatively you could use the XDCAM Transfer tool.

When you Log and Transfer it automatically transcodes to ProRes so there's no difference. However, you may prefer to use Compressor (if it is capable of reading the XDCAM files) to make use of clusters for faster processing speed and any additional post-processing you may wish to add to the files such as watermarks.

I had some free time today so I modified the FAQ to be up-to-date with FCPX 10.0.3:

CS 5.5 came out at NAB 2011, before FCPX was even announced, so they haven't really responded to it yet. I don't know what they're planning but I do know that their forum has been inundated with Mac users posting bug reports and feature requests, so I hope they've been listening.

We make an app, Housekeeper, that trashes the cache for you. You'll be able to do this in the trial version:

Try trashing preferences. I've seen weird issues like this before caused by corrupt prefs.

YouTube's transcriber is laughable at best. It's very hard to do, even for a company as big as Google.

I wrote a bit about this topic last year:
I think what you will miss from FCP depends on your workflow. If you're used to cutting music videos with lots of multicam angles, you'll be out of luck with Premiere because it only supports 4 angles. I personally haven't had any major complaints about the feature set but I have found that it feels less solid and stable than Avid or FCP. I hope they

No, you can just go to the Purchased tab in the App Store and redownload it

From Crash Analyzer:
General Error 34 (Final Cut Pro)
This error occurs either when your hard disk is full or when there is no media to export.
Suggested Actions
* Make sure you have at least 20% remaining space on your hard drive.
* Ensure that the sequence you are trying to export is not empty.
* Make sure you did not accidentally set an in point at the end of the sequence.

Delete the app from your Applications folder, then launch the Mac App Store and reinstall it from the Purchased tab. It will automatically install the 10.0.3 version.

Alex, I just wanted to mention that Plugin Manager in Pro Maintenance Tools has been able to install title plugins for a while now and the next version will support effects, generators and transitions and greatly improved FCPX support.

IMO their biggest mistake was killing FCP 7 on day one. None of the features of FCPX would have mattered if Apple had said FCP 7 was still supported and FCPX was a work in progress that would eventually replace it long-term.

The Premiere project can be transferred by exporting as a Final Cut Pro XML file. Not all effects are supported - here is a list of effects that will be translated:
Motion is missing a lot of features from After Effects and it will be much harder to bring it across. I really don't think you'll be able to convert it adequately.

I think the best way of doing this is to target a particular user or workflow with the Lite version. So you could target it at the TV industry by having all of the GPU acceleration of the full version (that is Smoke's selling point after all) but limit it to HD output. If you want 2K or 4K, you have to buy the full version. That's what Blackmagic did with Resolve.

This is a new feature in Media Composer 6 that I haven't had a chance to test yet so I can't speak for how well it works. I'd imagine it's more reliable than AMA though.

There are two ways to add QuickTime media to your project:
1) AMA, which links directly to the QuickTime media files.
2) Importing (or Fast Importing for supported formats), which creates new MXF media files.
AMA isn't the most reliable workflow. It can cause performance and stability problems with large projects, and several functions such as creating AAFs and Digital Cuts aren't availa

I've found plugins to be useful when a scratch or hair spans only a single frame. If it spans multiple frames and covers important action I've never had any luck with them. In those situations I've had to have a reshoot or do painstaking paint and roto work.

That's correct, FCPX doesn't yet export markers.
The two solutions are:
1. Add them manually in Compressor before encoding to MPEG-2.
2. Export a Final Cut Pro XML file and then use QT Edit in Pro Media Tools to automatically create chapters in your exported movie from the XML data:

P.S. I'd advise checking that the post house can actually accept a QuickTime movie before you start going down this route.

Panasonic makes a free AVCCAM QuickTime importer. You can use it to open the clips in QuickTime, MPEG Streamclip or Compressor and transcode them to whatever format you want.

DVCAM only supports four tracks of 32 kHz audio. It is limited to two tracks for 48 kHz.
Can you not give the post house a QuickTime movie that they can write to Digibeta tape?
