I would be more prone to follow grafixjoe's strategy of backing up to DVD-5s (4.7 GB) or DVD-9s (8.5 GB), or Blue-Ray when it becomes more economical. However, a few years ago, I read an Internet article that discussed "disc rot." It said that disc rot happens when the epoxy that holds tby DH - Café LA Looking For Inexpensive MiniDV Deck - 15 years agoHi all. I have not participated in this forum for over a year, so please forgive me, as I am slightly behind in technology. I am looking for an inexpensive MiniDV deck that I can use to load tapes into Final Cut Studio. My candidate deck does not have to have a lot of "bells and whistles." The only thing about which I care is that it must reliably load my tapes into FCP Studby DH - Café LA Re: Build taking forever! - 17 years agoHi all. Jennx, could you please fully describe the following? Model of your Mac. Speed of your Mac's microprocessor. Is it a dual-core? Amount of RAM memory. Version of Mac OS X. Version of FCP. Version of DVDSP. Available free disk space? If you have previousely processed a one hour video within DVDSP to completion, you should still be able to do that now. If you are not, thby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Build taking forever! - 17 years agoHi all. I am not currently at my computer, but I thought I would try to help. Q1: What version of DVDSP are you using? Q2: Did you use Compressor to convert your footage into MPEG2 before importing it into DVDSP, or are you letting DVDSP convert your footage into MPEG2? I always use Compressor to convert my footage before importing it into DVDSP. Also, using Compressor givesby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Plug and Play - 17 years agoHi all. Set your FIRST_PLAY parameter to the track that you want to automatically want to play. In the Inspector Menu, this parameter should be listed when you click on the disc icon. The other parameter you may want to set is END_JUMP. This specifies what should happen next after the track has played. Once again, thanks for the advice. Andrew, you make good sense. Actually, I think I would prefer a tripod. That way, I eliminate any possible camera movement in any axis. As far as speaking ahead of time with the officiant, yes, I always do this. I especially do this to find out how long the ceremony is. It would be highly unprofessional to have to change 60 minute tapes inby DH - Café LA Re: Need Advice On Using A Panasonic AGDVX100B - 17 years agoHi all. Thanks for the initial replies. Andrew, I will be editing the footage myself. It will be edited using Final Cut Studio on Power Mac with 2 GB RAM and multiple 200 GB drives. The final product will be a DVD-5 or a DVD-9. Scott, the rental store also had Sony PD-150s, but having first researched other posts in this forum, it seems that the DVX100B is comparable to the PD-170.by DH - Café LA Need Advice On Using A Panasonic AGDVX100B - 17 years agoHi all. I will be shooting a family member's wedding in a few weeks. I am not sure how well light the sanctuary will be, and I do not have the opportunity to visit the church ahead of time. From my local rental agency, I have reserved an AGDVX100B, as I was told that this is a good camera to use when in low light situations. I have also reserved an Ultra Light to help brighten up what I aby DH - Café LA Re: Formatting... the device is not supported for the requested burn operation - 17 years agoHi all. Lola, I am not currently in front of my computer, but I will attempt to help you anyway. First, I am not familiar with a blank disc size of 12 cm. I am familiar with disc sizes of 4.7 GB and 8.5 GB. To what size blank disc are you trying to burn your project? Perhaps this setting is the cause of your problems. As far as the warnings are concerned, they are just that. Theby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Insufficient disc space for encoding - 17 years agoHi all. Mikey, you make good sense. I didn't think of it in that way. If the only interaction that Compressor has is to grab a file from disk, then that should be the fastest way to process a movie within Compressor. However, the only setback is the added time to create the self contained movie. Another setback would be, if you discover that you made a mistake in your movie, and you haby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Insufficient disc space for encoding - 17 years agoHi all. I just read this thread. From what I read from another thread on this forum, you should save your FCP (Final Cut Pro) movie as a reference movie. Then, launch Compressor and open the reference movie using Compressor. You should not export the movie into Compressor from FCP, as that adds another software layer that will slow down the encoding process. I hope this helps. Gooby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Sales guys are evil. - 17 years agoHi all. The DVDSP Tutorial DVDs that should have come with your DVDSP package is a great first step. After that, I would try reading the first three chapters of the DVDSP manual. Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: MEDIA LIMIT EXCEEDED- NEED ADVICE - 17 years agoHi all. DM, here is something you may want to try: 1: Open the successfully burned project and perform a Save As to a different name. 2: Close all projects, and open the new project you created in Step 1. 3: Import all of the required assets for the second project. Then, remove all of the unnecessary assets that were left over from the Save As. 4: Finally, after the necessarby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: DVD Media - 17 years agoHi all. Bingo, I believe that DVD Studio 2 can not natively handle DVD-9 (dual layer discs). I used to use DVDSP2 as well. Because of the DVD-9 limitation, I had to get Toast Titanium 6, and then install the 6.07 patch that installs dual layer capabilites into Toast Titanium. I have read on other posts in this forum that DVDSP3 and above should be able to handle DVD-9s natively. I hope thiby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: DVD-9 format 8.5 GB disk holds how many gibibytes? - 17 years agoHi all. John, you are welcome. The problem with storage devices is that their manufacturers use GB to mean 1 times ten to the nineth power. Technically, they are right. However, they are using base ten. Computers use base two. So when people format a 200 GB drive and wonder why it shows only 186 GB of hard disk space, they think that either the drive is defective or that perhaps 14 GB wentby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: DVD-9 format 8.5 GB disk holds how many gibibytes? - 17 years agoHi all. I'm glad this thread has been created, as I have often wondered similar things. 8.5 GB = 8,500,000,000 bytes (decimal, i.e. powers of 10) Divide this three times by 1024, you get 7.916 GB (binary, i.e. powers of 2). To be safe, I'll round down to 7.91. Therefore, technically speaking, 8.5 GB (decimal) equates to 7.91 GB (binary). Although a DVD-9 technically has 7.91 GB of space,by DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: External Burn - 17 years agoHi all. Hold423, I believe that DVDSP 3 and above is compatible with external FireWire burners. Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: I cant create menu - 17 years agoHi all. J.Corbett, could you please explain your problem in more detail. I was not able to understand you. Thanks. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Fast Forward? - 17 years agoHi all. Andrea, at least in FCP, repeatedly pressing the "L" key on the keyboard will increase the play speed of the video in the current sequence. Repeatedly pressing the "J" key will do the same, but it will play the sequence in reverse. You may want to try this in DVDSP. I am not near my computer right now, so I can not confirm this. Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Size Of Lead-In And Lead-Out On A DVD-5 - 17 years agoHi all. In trying to better my workflow, I am trying to better understand the architecture of a blank DVD-5. I have searched the Internet, but I can not find the information I need. Does anyone know the size, in MB, of a DVD-5's lead-in and lead-out area? Thanks in advance. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Changing Chapter Titles in Index - 17 years agoHi all. I believe you should be able to change the chapter marker titles within DVDSP. I am not near my computer right now. However, what happens if you put the cursor on top of one of the markers whose title you wish to change? Does the title show up in the Inspector window? If so, try changing the title within the Inspector window. Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Encoding length of time? - 17 years agoHi all. To add more to the soup, using Compressor, you can schedule several compression versions of the same footage, put them into one batch, and submit the batch. This way, you can have several versions of the same footage and can readily choose which one looks to the best to you within DVDSP. This is especially useful when trying to fit footage onto a DVD-5 (4.7 GB). The last thing you waby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Ripping Dvd's - 17 years agoHi all. Dom, did you create the DVDs that you are ripping? Do you own the footage contained on these DVDs, or are they commercial DVDs? Ripping commercial DVDs is a huge no-no, and asking for advice on ripping DVDs on this forum is generally frowned upon. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Bit Rate for ammount of footage - 17 years agoHi all. Jwhyland, I have a few suggestions that may help you. Regardless of the sound file's size, you should always strive to compress your audio into *.AC3. Why? First, DVD players work less hard when they play DVDs with *.AC3 files. They work harder when they have to process uncompressed (*.AIFF) sound files. Also, the space that you free up when compressing your audio can be useby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: DVD Studio Pro 4 - 17 years agoHi all. Drhimes, I just upgraded as well. I upgraded to the Universal Final Cut Studio. To answer your question, A.Pack is now a part of Compressor. At least, I read this in another thread on this forum. In a way, it makes sense to have it be a part of Compressor, since a good workflow would probably involve using Compressor to batch process all of your assets in one swoop, and then spend tby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: DVD Studio Pro 4 - 17 years agoHi all. Drhimes, did you check your disk space? Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: what is the difference between .mpg and .m2v? - 18 years agoHi all. Paul, *.MPG or *.MPEG is composed of an audio component and a video component. The audio component is comprised of a *.AC3 or *.AIFF file. *.AC3 is compressed audio whereas *.AIFF is uncompressed audio. When making a DVD, always use *.AC3 for your sound. DVD players work less hard when *.AC3 is used. Noka, most likely, you are using a single track for your DVD project. Therefore, in a single DVD track, all sound files must be encoded at the same rate. This includes the soundtrack of the film. Also, by doing this, you are freeing up even more space on your blank DVD-5 for other things. Take care. -DHby DH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Compressing - 17 years agoHi JodiE. Here is a URL to a great tutorial on using Compressor: It basically taught me everything I need to know to use Compressor with ease. One thing though. As discussed in a previous thread, you should not export out of FCP and into Compressor, as this introduces an unnecessary software layer that slows down the process. Instead, you should save your FCP project as a reference moviby DH - Café LA Re: Avoiding FireWire Bus Contention - 17 years agoHi all. Gentlemen, thanks again for the advice. It was really helpful.
