Material is mostly Pro Res, and Pro Res LT. Using my FW800 Voyager drives from OWC, I had to do a lot of rendering to see what anything was looking like, regardless of how I had the FCP playback settings. I am wondering, if I buy a 4-8 TB Thunderbolt RAID, will I see far less red on my timeline and will greby Dan Brockett - Café LA Wedding Videographer Recommendations? - 12 years agoAnyone on this board or know of anyone in Ventura County, Ca. who is a talented wedding videographer? This is for a friend who asked me if I knew of anyone so I thought I would see if any of you have anyone who comes to mind? Wedding in July, I don't have any details. We must send a batch of DVDs to Brazil where I am told that a system called PAL M is used which is NOT 625 lines. Supposedly it is 525 lines, the same as NTSC, it just uses a different color subcarrier so the NTSC pictures display in monby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: OT - Attack of the As? Mail is showing As instead of E-mail content? - 13 years agoDave: You had the right idea. Another user over at Creative Cow also suggested the same idea, corrupt font cache. He suggested trying OnyX so I did and it solved the issue. Not sure why FontNuke wouldn't fix it and OnyX did but I am glad that something fixed it. www.nytimes.com front page still will not display correctly on my current version of FireFox 3.6.12, there are huge gaps of whiteby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: OT - Attack of the As? Mail is showing As instead of E-mail content? - 13 years agoHi Dave: Downloaded FontNuke and ran it. It found 16 font cache files and deleted them all, then re-started. Unfortunately, it did not do anything with the font problem. On an off chance (because I mainly use FireFox), I booted up Safari and I am seeing the font issue on several areas of my start page, www.nytimes.com 90% of the page displays correctly but in certain small areas, I am gettingby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: OT - Attack of the As? Mail is showing As instead of E-mail content? - 13 years agoHi Greaser: I've never even heard of Little Snitch and don't know what it is, so I doubt it could be that. I only have one User on this laptop but I will create another account and will check that out. It seems to be happening with all e-mails that have any sort of footer, signature or graphics. If you just e-mail straight text, no problem but anything else turns into random groups of As oby Dan Brockett - Café LA OT - Attack of the As? Mail is showing As instead of E-mail content? - 13 years agoHi all: Apologies for the off topic subject but just in the past few days, most of the e-mails I am receiving are showing up as full of little As, some inside boxes, some just lines of As. It seems that they are mostly showing up instead of signatures, graphics, etc. Very strange. I use Mail and I can send and receive my own e-mails with graphics attached and they show up fine. I mailed myselfby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Has anyone tried Footage Firm Music Library? - 13 years agoGreat to know guys, I am going to order their music and give it a try. Thanks, Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Has anyone tried Footage Firm Music Library? - 13 years agoHi J. Corbett: It does seem like a good deal so I will probably go for it. I have an old copy of Reason laying around here somewhere. I have to be honest, I tried it back when it first came out in what, 2002, 2003 and I couldn't make heads or tails of it, even though a really talented producer sat down with me and tried to teach me the ropes. I know it is a very powerful program but myby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Has anyone tried Footage Firm Music Library? - 13 years agoGood to know Mike. I may try that out, I have a lot of clients lately who just won't spend thousands of dollars to license some needle drop. Never thought I would have to go back to buyout but in this economy, people are scrimping on everything. Cheers, Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Has anyone tried Footage Firm Music Library? - 13 years agoHi all: I keep getting this e-mail from They are claiming that you can send them shipping and postage for essentially free buyout library music. While the quality is not the best I have heard, these tracks seem perfectly acceptable for some of my corporate clients, especially the ones who are balking at the $200.00 to $500.00 per track needle drop that the best music libraries charge.by Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Slightly OT - Headphone Recommendation Please - 13 years agoNot knowing if you are responsible for the audio tracks on the projects you edit or if the material goes to a real sound mixer, Greaser, remember that you cannot make any audio decisions while wearing headphones. The levels of aural detail that headphones reveal are akin to looking at a painting through a microscope. Fine if you want to examine a tiny portion of the image at a time but for theby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: DVCPROHD 720 24pN footage edited in a DVCPRO50 Anamorphic Sequence? - 13 years agoThanks for the advice guys. As far as delivery specs, they don't have any, I think they just want decent sized widescreen QTs that they can use for training. They don't care which codec, exact size, etc. I think I have this figured out as far as the QT issue. In QT Pro, I am using the "Export for Web" setting and the resulting movie from the input 720 x 480 anamorphic file that cameby Dan Brockett - Café LA DVCPROHD 720 24pN footage edited in a DVCPRO50 Anamorphic Sequence? - 13 years agoHi all: What am I doing wrong? Shot DVCPROHD720 24pN. Client doesn't care about HD output, wants SD widescreen DVD and widescreen QT H.264 for their website. I edit in the DVCPRO50 Anamorphic time line, all is good. This is fun, I can re-frame and zoom in to turn a single camera shoot into a two camera looking sequence. I know, old hat for pro editors but a new way of editing for me, I usuallyby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - 13 years agoThanks Derek, that solved it. I appreciate the advice. Thanks too Strypes. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - 13 years agoHi all: I have checked the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview under View > Video Playback. But playback is still normal, not Cinema Desktop. What am I not doing or doing wrong to make this work? I normally edit on a G5 with a Kona 3 so I don't have this issue but I am editing this project on my laptop. Kind of a drag. This timeline is DVCPro50 anamorphic, if it matters? 15" 2.4GHz i5 MBby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: New camera - 13 years agoI don't know Jeff. A valid case can be made that the rental recommendation is both ALWAYS the right answer and NEVER the right answer. The camera industry is always in a state of flux and always "almost there", but not quite. Renting is a PITA and you have to factor all of the phone calls, gas, hassle, insurance and yes, more hassle to pickup, prep, load up, return, go through all ofby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: New camera - 13 years agoI agree with Shane. If you are doing a lot of green screen, you want a 4:2:2 codec like the HPX170 uses. However, the new AG-AF100 is hitting at the end of December, a 4/3 Micro Sensor with removable lenses, AVCHD, XLRs, timecode and all of the other goodness that DSLR users wish that they had. You would want to rent a 4:2:2 recorder when shooting green screen though, but the body is sellingby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: RED and external audio - 13 years agoJust as an aside. for those who don't know, the other reason to shoot double system sound with the RED One is that the RED One has really crappy audio quality. Early builds had basically unusable sound quality with lots of hiss, low dynamic range, etc. They have improved and mitigated some of the noise issues but every RED shoot I have shot as a DP and crewed on has used double system sound.by Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: OT. This wouldn't be possible if it weren't for LAFCPUG. - 13 years agoWow Jeff: I totally dig your trailer, the film looks amazing. I am so thrilled to see something original come from an indie. This looks like a very interesting film. Nice work and congratulations! Dan Brockettby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Multiclip Editing Advice for Eight Camera Shoot - 14 years agoActually Douglas this is my own doc and I totally have planned it out, I was just asking advice on how best to make it work. I have been doing this long enough to know the proper way to have done this but since it is basically no budget and mixed media, I just wanted to see what was possible. Many of the cameras were borrowed so I had no way to pre-test this workflow before shooting. If it turnsby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Multiclip Editing Advice for Eight Camera Shoot - 14 years agoThanks for the response Strypes. I was under the impression that each stream of 720 24pN was closer to 40 Mb/s? Does this sound right? You obviously do need 100 Mb/s for any of the none native DVCPRO HD frame rates but what about 24pN? Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Multiclip Editing Advice for Eight Camera Shoot - 14 years agoHi all: I completed an eight camera concert shoot this past Saturday. The shoot went well and the footage looks good for what it is. I am pursuing a "mixed media" aesthetic for this project so it is not important that the footage match in any way as it will all be radically manipulated in CC, possibly some with Magic Bullet to obtain several different looks. I think music docs can ofby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Lighting Puzzle - 14 years agoYes, I am at basically a slug on the sidewalk compared to the Ferrari 599-like level Roger's eye and experience. He is definitely one of my favorite DPs and a genius. He is also one of the only ASC level DPs who actually keeps his own very informative and excellent website, he really does play it forward with sharing his immense knowledge. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Lighting Puzzle - 14 years agoYeah, I have a tendency to write articles disguised as responses on boards ;-) Too verbose for sure. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Lighting Puzzle - 14 years agoHi Dave: I agree with the others, LAFCPUG is not really frequented by a lot of DPs, but there are a few of us here. D-Mac is definitely on the right track but I would add that your 9000k is really pretty meaningless over the course of a shoot, unless you are doing that shoot in one shot of about 30 seconds. The color temperature of the sun changes throughout the day and changes constantly. Too bad, I edited some good shows there and even did a few shoots in their parking garage a few years ago. Nice people. He asked my advice and I told him that if the projects he is editing are mainly for the web or SD DVD, a new 27" i7 iMac would do fine. We talked about the storage limitations of FW 800 vs. fibre or E-Sata on a Mac Pro. He went for the iMac and so far is very happy. I was at his place last weekby Dan Brockett - Café LA |
