However, the HELP files and online documentation are now Spotlight search-able! -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Why is HD 960x720 instead of 1280x720? - 17 years agoMany HD formats used compressed rasters. HDV = 1440x1080 for 1080. 960x720 for 720. DVCPRO HD = 1280x1080 for 1080. 960x720 for 720. Some HDV cameras are coming on the market with full 1920 sensors, but I'm not sure how they're packing the image into the data stream -- if they're staying full 1920 or if they're reducing the raster size to comply with the established standards listed abovby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Andy, Regarding the External Video Monitoring: 1. A DV or HDV sequence can now be output to an SDI signal on a 3rd party interface. 2. An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence can be output to a DV FireWire output. 3. An HDV sequence can be output to a DV FireWire output. I don't see anywhere that XDCAM HD to DV FireWire is supported. I'll double check when I get back in the office. Seby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Tom, It's an XML transfer back and forth between the two apps (yes, you can send BACK to FCP!). Color will render basic dissolves, but that's it for now. Any geometry changes, aspect ratio conversions, or repo's that you create in Color's Geometry room will carry back over to FCP's motion tab too. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoGreat questions Mark and Derek. I do not know the answer, but will try to find out for you. I'm going to hazard a guess and say if the media files are locked on the SAN, then the rename operation will definitely fail. While you may not lock media files now as part of your current workfllow, it might not be a bad idea to consider it since 90% of the time they're read-only. I'll get back to yby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Filmman, This is a tough question. The G5 is an awesome computer, but the Intel-based MacPro systems are dramatically faster -- especially if you're working on difficult formats like HDV and XDCAM HD. Upwards of 3x. The newer formats, like ProRes 422 will work on the older systems but all optimization moving forward is for the Intel processors. While we'd love to see you buy a new Macby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Ken, At this time Compressor can address all 8 cores. There is some benefit to using an 8 core system if the codec you're working with is threaded. For example, H.264 is threaded so we can segment it on all 8 cores. Other codecs, like MPEG2 for example, work better with fewer cores. There's a set of diminishing returns when using codecs that can't take advantage of them. It's a compliby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Chuck, HDV i/o uses the standard log & capture interface. Log & Transfer is strictly for tapeless acquisition from devices like P2 and Red. The real benefit of using ProRes 422 in an HDV workflow is for renders and effects heavy composites, titles etc. You can set ProRes 422 as the codec to use for rendering when working in native HDV and XDCAM HD sequences. This gives you headby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi there... We've got SmoothCam in both FCP6 and Motion 3. Both use optical flow image analysis technology from Shake. Motion 3 uses optical flow for retiming too, and yields beautiful results. You can now create a retiming effect in FCP, send it to Motion (with retiming effect in tact) and then render it using Motion 3 with optical flow. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Jude, There is a new preference that lets you determine the exact gamma of incoming videos or stills. You can select the gamma from a pop-up, or enter a custom value. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Phil, There are many smaller enhancements to FCP that weren't covered in depth at NAB. Some of them are covered on our web-site, and others are found in the "What's new" documentation that you'll get with the software. For the most part, trimming hasn't changed too much. There are a bunch of really nice smaller additions that we were demonstrating at NAB too: - Rename clips iby PfA - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi John, It requires a fast video card (see the list on our web-site). The cards it is compatible with first appeared in G5 class machines. Therefore, a G5 is recommended. We do not block the installer if you have a G4 so in theory you could try it. But it's not a supported configuration for Color because the video card is not sufficient. Color includes a single display mode for 17"by PfA - Café LA Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi everyone, Just thought I'd come up for air from NAB to answer some questions on Final Cut Studio 2. Send notes to this thread with your questions and I'll do my best to answer them this weekend. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Up res to HD from SD - 17 years agoThe version of Compressor included with Final Cut Studio 5.x includes some great optical flow based scaling technology. You can up-res from SD to HD and get great results. Optical flow basically does a pixel-by-pixel analysis, creates vectors for every pixel, and then generates completely new frames as necessary. This isn't your standard scaling/retiming algorithm. The results are extremely hiby PfA - Café LA Re: FCP H 4.5 not working after upgrading to OS 10.4 Tiger - 17 years agoFCP HD (4.5) was released under Mac OS X 10.3 and has not been qualified with the version of Mac OS X Tiger you are using (10.4.x). Only the current version of Final Cut Studio (5.1.x) has been qualifed with Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.9. Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: weird codec ?? - 17 years agoWhere'd you get this file from? Sounds like a corrupt QT file. As you see in the whitepaper link somebody posted above, there's a reference to Apple ProIO compatible firewire devices and cards. These aren't cards and devices from Apple. It is a reference to the API our developers (like BlackMagic and AJA) use when building drivers that are compatible with Final Cut Studio. vout is the stby PfA - Café LA Re: wonky framerate conversions - 17 years agoThe current version (5.1.x) includes new pre-sets in compressor for standards conversion (NTSC to PAL, for example). They work beautifully. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Working with Mutiple formats in one timeline - 17 years agoYou can work with the HDV natively in FCP 5.1.x. Just plug in the HDV camera or deck via FW to your Mac. Adding SD to the sequence will need to be rendered for final output. Just set your RT popup menu in the Sequence (on the left of the Timeline) to "Unlimited RT" and turn the Dynamic options on. That should give you decent real-time playback while your mixing the HDV with the SD.by PfA - Café LA Re: FCP upgrade from 5.0.4? - 17 years agowww.apple.com/universal/crossgrade for complete details. PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD 720 24P - 17 years agoFCP 4.x will not recognize the multi-channel files. You need FCP 5.1.x for this... (5.1.2 also includes a GREATLY enhanced P2 Importer!) -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: FCP 5.1.2 at IBC? - 17 years agoWow! What an enthusiastic response. Thanks for being such a great community. Cheers, Paulby PfA - Café LA Re: FCP 5.1.2 at IBC? - 17 years agoAt IBC this week we demonstrated Final Cut Pro 5.1.2-- a maintenance release that provides compatibility with a variety of cameras and devices as well as a significant number of stability and reliability improvements that customers have requested. Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 will be available via Software Update for registered users of Final Cut Pro 5.1 within the next 30 days. Motion, however, which is part of FCS can take advantage of 64-bit memory addressing and will use as much RAM as you can put into the system. Cheers, Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Film & TV workflow whitepaper - 17 years agoHi everyone, We posted a new whitepaper/technology guide today that covers workflows for film and TV produciton. It can be found at: We've got other whitepapers at this location too- Cheers, Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Steve-Note is LIVE: New Towers at 3 gHz! - 17 years agoThe reference to Final Cut Pro 5.2.1 on the web-site has been removed. It was a typo. The performance testing on Mac Pro was done with a beta version of Final Cut Pro 5.1.x. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Mac Pro Thoughts - 17 years agoHi guys, The Mac Pro has two separate FireWire busses. The inputs on the FRONT (both FW400 & 800) are on one PHY, and the inputs on the BACK (again, both) are on a different PHY. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Apple, Sony FCP Tour - 17 years agoLA is already booked... that was fast! I'm not sure what happened there, but here's how you can fix the out-of-sync clips you've got now: 1. Drag a clip from the Browser into a Sequence. 2. Press the Spacebar to play the clip and if the clip is out of sync then pause playback. 3. Press Shift-L to deactivate Linked Selection. 4.
