I've seen these available to "buy it now" on ebay for over $9K, but we're willing to let them go for better than that. Details on head, drum hours and pictures available to serious buyers. I think his opinion of LaCie drives is accurate. Three years ago we bought a whole fleet of LaCie's: 1 Tb, 250's, 500's. At least a dozen drives. Most of them are now dead! Especially the 1 TB's. They puttered out like a middle aged couch potato running a marathon... never made it to the finish line. Since these drives were used primarily as back up, tby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Avid and Color - 15 years agoThe easiest and most dependable way would be to think of "Color" as if it were a DaVinci. How would you prep for that? You'd output a digibeta (SD) of your entire sequence and then do a tape to tape color correction of the textless master. If you need to go "cross platform" that would be your best bet. Sure, you can import sequences via automatic duck, but honestly, if yby mark raudonis - Color Re: Lav Article Debuts - 15 years agoDan, I now know more about lav mics that I ever thought possible! Great community resource for anyone working with sound. Thanks. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Bulding a slate - 15 years agoJeff, The only difference between AVID's title tool and Boris is that with Avid you can "see" the background underneath as you type. With Boris you don't see it while composing. Other than that, it's exactly the same. You don't need a separate layer for each "element". We create slates all day long. They're one layer of text over a background. That's it. Is that noby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Anamorphic to 4:3 - 15 years agoOnce you get the image to play correctly, as suggested above, you then need to output it onto tape. With 16 X 9 footage going to a 4 x3 frame you have three choices: Center punch. Letter box. Pan and scan. You've got to decide how to approach it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: a British cardiac arrest scenario.... - 16 years agoTHe "Harding Test". As I understand it, this test is designed to detect the "pulsing" of light (luminence) that may trigger seizures in any suseptible viewer. Therefore, any of the "limiters", scopes, etc. mentioned above will be of no help. What you need is someone to say, "Hey, that's cut too fast! Slow it down". No automatic process that I knowby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Indian countdown plug in - 16 years agoDon't know about a "plug in", but if you google, "tv test pattern indian", you can certainly find it. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Uprez DV NTSC to to HD - 16 years agoChris, In one sentence you've mixed frame rate, resolution, and format in a way that makes my head spin! (You don't "uprez to 23.98". Uprezzing is a resolution term, not a frame rate reference) Your biggest issue is the frame rate mismatch. If you cut in a 29.97 timeline, it is no simple task. You have to remove the 2/3 pulldown required to squeeze 24fps into 30fps. If you cutby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Digi Beta ??? - 16 years agoInteresting question. As long as there is Standard Def, there will be the need for Digibeta. Since the world has gone Hi Def, I think it's a safe bet to say that there will be NO MORE NEW SD FORMATS coming out. Therefore, it would be a good idea to have a low mileage Digibeta around for the future. The question really is, can you make a return on your investment BEFORE SD becomes extinct?by mark raudonis - Café LA Re: BWF audio files drifting out of sync - 16 years agoAndreas, Thanks for the offer, but I took the files and the corresponding videotapes to our vendor today. They confirmed that the deck was reading the internal clock on the digital recorder and NOT the sync sent from the central source. Now it's in their hands, and they are going to "fix it". Since we've used this workflow before, I was going nuts thinking it was something weby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Multi computer setup question - 16 years agoCheck out: They make just about every configuration of extender imaginable. Sounds like you want to locate your CPU's in another room and just extend out the keyboards, Mouse, and monitor. (Classic KVM). I'd try that over any kind of remote desktop solution. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: BWF audio files drifting out of sync - 16 years agoAndreas, Thanks for the response. FCP 6.01 is what we're using. We have your BWF2XML software (Works great so far), and I believe that's what we used to do the import. (Our assistants did it) I'm going to try the "virtual resampling". I wasn't on set, (not going to make that mistake again!), so I can't confirm the settings were correct going in. Markby mark raudonis - Café LA BWF audio files drifting out of sync - 16 years agoWe're doing a "dual system" show that's using a Fostex PD-606 digital recorder. This is a standard def, 29.97 drop frame, multicam shoot. We've used this workflow before to much success. Today however, we're finding that the audio is drifting out of sync after about a minute. I'm sure I'm not the first to experience this, and I'd appreciate any feedback on suggestions to fix it.by mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Onlining offline footage - 16 years agoAustin, You've just learned the cardinal rule for anyone using the classic "off-line to on-line workflow"... that is : NEVER RENAME YOUR CLIPS!!! If you want to call something by a descriptive name (WS HOUSE EXT) then use the comments column. That's what it's there for. FCP uses the CLIP NAME as the actual FILE NAME, and thus, as you've discovered, when you change it, you can gby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: ProRes VS. Standard QT - 16 years agoI agree with Loren here. We have several shows that originate on DVCAM25, but all of our finishing is at 8 bit uncompressed. In addition to the better color space mentioned above, the GRFX will benefit tremendously from this workflow. And, there's the pesky little line difference between DV (720 X 480) and NTSC standard of 720 X 486. Those extra six line can be a deal breaker for some delivby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: POLL : What is your workflow? - 16 years agoEven though I voted for option #1 (off-line to on-line) the truth is I find that our workflow is changing. Because we post "Reality TV" with astronomical shooting ratios, Off-line RT is the only practical solution. One season of one show can generate almost three THOUSAND hours of media. And, we've usually got three to six shows going simultaneously. Having said all that, I am makiby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Need advice on a storage solution - 16 years agoQ, Your question is a frequent one, worthy of placement in the FAQ folder. Only problem is, there is NO overall answer for everyone. It really comes down to money and what kind of performance you need. As you've noted, you seem to be reaching the end of the "daisy chain" firewire methodology. At a certain point, you'll want to migrate to a RAID. The G5 will only support twoby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: capture scratch folders - 16 years ago"It still seems to me that it would be kinda nice just so you could organize in the browser as you log..." You can. But, I think you're missing the point that the finder gives you a much greater degree of flexibility for projects both large and small. For larger projects, I'd even argue that it's the ONLY way you should approach project organization. While organizing in the browby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: capture scratch folders - 16 years agoWell.... I have to disagree with Shane and Derek here. There IS a value to organizing your media at the FINDER level and NOT in the browser. In our workflow, the person doing the digitizing is often NOT the editor. So.... to keep things organized, we use a SEPARATE project just for digitizing, then move that media into appropriate folders BEFORE anyone starts editing. This accomplishes aby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Changing Clip Names - 16 years agoRenaming is NEVER a good idea. I suggest that if you want to add descriptive information about a clip, use the "comments" column. As you've discovered, FCP uses the clip name as it's actual file name. If you change that name, you're wrecking havoc on any media management process down the road. Furthermore, if you're in a networked environment with shared storage, your renamingby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: Best Chroma Key - 16 years agoWe use "Advantedge" by Ultimatte, the people that practically invented chroma keying. This is hands down the best, most effective keyer we've found. It also works with After effects, so ;you have some flexibility there. As you might guess, it ain't cheap. Approx $1,380 per seat. But you do get what you pay for. Did you happen to watch "Mythbusters" last night? They did a "Macgyver" inspired episode... you remember that show: I have this paper clip and a piece of a light bulb filament, if I just touch these two wires together I can achieve cold fusion and save the world. There's no way that you're going to achieve sync with the computer monitors and an outboard HD monitor being fed via firewire. It's always gonna be around 5-8 frames out. That's basically enough to make editing impossible. (You're trying to mark in on the fly and you're always off) The only solution that I know of is a "card" based in/out like the Konaby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: OT: Blu-Ray vs HD DVD = We have a WINNER... - 16 years agoHow about adding "Standard Def" analog TV to the list? Even in Australia they have their own league. Of course, the league in Britian is much more established, organized, and predates the colonies by hundreds of years. So, they might just give that Ferrari of yours a run for the money! ("dots" or not!) Markby mark raudonis - Café LA Re: naming conventions - 16 years agoEven more specifically... it's a Windows thing. Windows is MUCH more sensitive to file name letters than mac ever was. Specifically with spaces... they were a huge problem. hence, the "underscore" to fill in the spaces. Mac seemed to handle the spaces OK, but would sometimes choke on the "/" or "." .
