I ask because I've tried importing 1080pA24 without removing advanced pulldown in the recent past. Then I tried selecting the clips and used the Tools menu option to remove advanced pulldown. It fails every time. I can only remove advanced pulldown after the fact if the footage came from DVCPRO HD on tby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: 59.94seq. & Drop Frame - only in FCP 6 - 15 years agoThat's exactly the problem. FCP 6.0.2 is the first version to support 59.94 drop frame timecode. It's in the release notes for 6.0.2. Andrew Balisby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Recreating thumbnails - 15 years agoLoren and Derek, with all due respect (as I admire and respect the posts I read from you), your solutions do not quite do it in this case. Reconnecting media is a headache in the making- time consuming, always the possibility that everything won't reconnect, and will take more time than my simple suggestion which has worked for me since FCP 1. And scrubbing the thumbnail in the timeline iby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Combining footage with different pixel aspect ratios - 15 years agoAs far as the DVD, no that should be using an NTSC pixel aspect ratio (non-square pixels). The Apple DVD Player will properly compensate for showing on a square pixel computer monitor. Only when playing a full resolution QT movie on the computer should you have concerns about square vs non-square. Your Web output will be properly converted to square pixel during the encode. While in FCP, stick wiby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Combining footage with different pixel aspect ratios - 15 years agoYou don't need FCP for most auto-aspect ratio conversions to happen. As soon as you place a graphic in the timeline FCP decides whether or not the aspect ratio should be changed. The main thing new about FCP 6 is that all these different formats play better in real time, but certain mixing of formats is absolutely fine in FCP 5. Here's a few questions: What's the final format before it goesby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Recreating thumbnails - 15 years agoHere's a link to a short article I wrote at Moviola.com's Resource Center to deal with this specific problem, located in the Troubleshooting section: Hope this helps. Andrew Balis Lead Instructor - Final Cut Pro moviola.comby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Timeline settings a great mystery - 15 years agoAlthough FCP might attempt to match a sequence to a clip, that doesn't mean FCP always can. If the format being imported into FCP is not a native format or compatible at all, you'll get the render bar. I would check the file you created- you say uncompressed, 8-bit- but that does not mean its the Apple uncompressed codec. If you can, highlight the clip and press Command/9 which will bring up tby Andrew Balis - Café LA Enhancements to Color workflow in new release Color 1.0.1 - 16 years agoNew news on the update released yesterday by Apple. Now, in Color 1.0.1, if you apply ONE 3-Way Color Corrector in FCP, then send the project to Color, the settings of the filter get intergrated into the Primary In room controls. So it takes your color correction from FCP and applies it as a starting point for your work in Color. The results won't be exact, as you're working in different coloby Andrew Balis - Color Re: HD - Like first grade all over again - 16 years agoNot to mention 23.98 and 24, 29.97 and 30, 59.94 and 60. It can be a real confusing world. Just to make one thing clear- its importnant when working in the US to (almost always) shoot the fractional (non-integer) frame rate to be compatible with US broadcasters in HD and for down-converting to SD NTSC. Aside from that, as Shane said, what standards?? :-) Its like the wild west right now. Tby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Poor quality when executing speed changes - 16 years agoSlo mo in FCP is way less than ideal. Any lateral movement will cause a strobe like effect. This is due to FCP duplicating frames to linger on the action longer. In camera slow motion records more frames, therefore smother motion. One thing to try in FCP though is to render first to determine whether or not the problem you are seeing is true. When playing back in real time FCP does not apply Framby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Text graphics still blurred/double vision with QT7 - 16 years agoYou could always create a 2nd partition, or install a new OS on a firewire drive with QT 7. Once you're finished working in FCP 3 on a system that's got a compatible QT, export as normal QT, reboot from the firewire drive, then do your QT exports from QT 7. Andrewby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Text graphics still blurred/double vision with QT7 - 16 years agoI can't tell you just what is supported, but Apple had a support article somewhere on their site that lists compatible configurations for all versions of FCP- its important for users of older versions of FCP not to use the latest versions of QuickTime and OS. Just which to use for which, I couldn't tell you from memory- but I'm almost positive that QT 7 is not recommended for FCP3. Andrew Baliby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: New DVD on Color - 16 years agoOh yes- I'm hard at work on a DVD for Ripple Training on Color- its already starting to have a nice shape, lots of tips and tricks- workflows- little troubleshooting things, and of course great examples on how we can correct footage as well as create some pretty cool looks. By the way- on a side note- keyframing in Color is pretty sweet- little nice things that can make our life easy- little thinby Andrew Balis - Color Re: Color Crash? - 16 years agoIts similar advice to FCP, but don't let screen savers or energy saver kick in. It will screw things up here and there. One thing that we may want to encourage here is asking people to not only share the specs of their computer, but include their graphics card as well as Color relies heavily on it. Some features, including internal processing bit depths will be limited unless a good, beefy carby Andrew Balis - Color Re: HD Cam submission - 16 years agoI personally would not try (unless absolutely needed) to convert from 29.97 to 23.98 if the material originated at 29.97. Going from 23.98 to 29.97 is a breeze, but going from 29.97 camera capture down to 23.98 will remove vital fields of information and will result in motion artifacts. Its only a good idea to convert from 29.97 to 23.98 if the footage started at 23.98, had a pulldown applied toby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Best thing I learned at LAFCPUG meeting tonight - 16 years agoShane- I thought the organization tips were great. As you said, so many people are starting out editing these days without a background as an assistant- and really don't know good organization techniques. I'd love to check out your disc to see what other goodies you covered. Andrewby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Audio Mixdown - 16 years agoIf you don't mixdown, then FCP uses the current Audio Playback Quality setting in the user prefs. This is especially important for mixing sample rates as when the setting is set to Low (the default), FCP does not up or down-sample audio to match the sequence settings. When mixing down- you are assured of high quality audio rendering and playback. You don't even need to change the playback audby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Viewing HD on SD monitor, among other things - 16 years agoAbout your concern of the flickering like effect on the original HD tapes- over many years being in telecine sessions, I've found a lot of quality control issues that the lab should have caught, but I often catch the problems during the session, and urge them to get to the root of the problem. I've seen a pulsing like effect going up and down like you mentioned, I've seen the side of the frame slby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: The Tool bench grayed blues - 16 years agoIn other words, go to the Tools menu and choose one of the options there. All those items "dock" on to a Tool Bench window. So, if you have open Video Scopes for example, it opens in a Tool Bench window. Then if you choose another Tools option, it will open in the same Tool Bench window. The tabs can be broken off if needed, but that's not the point. The point is that the Tool Bench isby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: color correcting on LCD monitor - 16 years agoWithout going to deep, your computer monitor does not match the proper color space needed for proper color correction. It can also be argued that its not high enough quality as well. That being said, there are a number of options for sending a corrected true signal and calibrating a computer monitor to match 601/709 specs. I haven't used these options myslef, so maybe someone else can chime in. Tby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Training - 16 years agoNot to toot my my own horn- ok- I guess I will. Andrewby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Hide Final Cut Pro Function Sometimes Disabled, Why? - 16 years agoThere's a quicker workaround. This happens to me a lot- and its not because I'm hiding the Finder (not that I'm aware of)- it does seem somewhat random, but I won't bet on it. Anyway, with FCP in front, hold down the Option key and click on the desktop. This will always hide FCP even if the options are grayed out in the Final Cut menu. PfA? - 17 years agoHere I'm guessing since we'll have to wait to see what actual behavior happens when it releases and we get our hands on it and get a chance to read the documentation that will ship with it, but I'm inclined to believe each attached display needs to be the minimum resolution for it to work. Andrewby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Color not for 15" MacBook Pro? PfA? - 17 years agoSorry, but no. Its not just the graphics card, the screen resolution must be 1680x1050 minimum. The 15' does not support this resolution. Andrew Balis Lead Final Cut Pro Instructor www.moviola.comby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Audio level for dialogue and music - 17 years agoI'm not quite sure that's exactly what Koz was referring to. If you master to -12 bars and tone, then your show should average at -12. If you send out -20 bars and tone(which can be adjusted), then your program should be set to average at -20 inside FCP. If Koz is changing the recording levels at the deck, this is a different thing. Just changing FCP's bars and tone does not change the audio leveby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: droped frames - 17 years agoMaybe things have gone well so far, but are you now working with a video format with a higher bit rate than what you've worked with in the past? It may be too fast for your drives. If this isn't the case, maybe your drive is fragmented, or there are two many other processes going on. Try restarting the computer and trying again. As for the fragmentation, try dragging all your media files off theby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: Why is HD 960x720 instead of 1280x720? - 17 years agoClose- but one format is uncompressed 16x9- HDCAM SR- it does record 1920x1080. As you mentioned, all other formats are anamorphic when recording to their on-board decks (except HDV 720p which as mentioned earlier is 1280x720). Boy it certainly does cause people a lot of confusion doesn't it. I'm pretty sure the Red will be 1920x1080 (but don't quote me on this) for HD recording. It also recorby Andrew Balis - Café LA Re: 720x486 vs 640x480 - 17 years agoIts a great question and causes a lot of people to question what's going on. When we output a QT movie at 720x486 it is meant for display on TV, not the computer. All SD video is non-square pixels so it will display wide in QuickTime, where the computer is natively a square pixel environment. 640x480 is the square pixel equivalent so that it displays correctly in the computer.
