This is how I'm using a 2017 iMac with a FW400 device (I also use a FW800 to FW400 cable to connect from the adapter to the device). The adapters are usually available for a good bit less on eBay.by clay - Café LA - X .MPG (mpeg-2) to DV for FCP 7 editing? - 9 years agoWorking with an install of FCP 7 (FCS 2), and was given a couple of .mpg files (straight from a camera) to "convert to DVD" (don't ask...this is one of those "no good deed goes unpunished" situations). Compressor doesn't seem to like to transcode them into anything, MPEG Streamclip requires the Quicktime MPEG-2 component to transcode, and I can't seem to get FFMPEGX or Handbraby clay - Café LA Starting new project, should I jump to FCPX or stick with 7? - 9 years agoI'm normally one to upgrade to new software at the earliest reasonable chance, but I've delayed the 7 to X move since I haven't had a ton of video work in the past couple of years. I know the 7 environment very well like many of you here, keyboard shortcuts are second nature to me, certain workflows just happen naturally. I used FCPX soon after it first came out with a previous job, just to testby clay - Café LA Re: Where to get certified in something odd? - 11 years agohmmm, good question. There may not be a specific certification, but more of a specific skillset that would make one qualified for such a job. Definitely a mix of video and IT experience. This is the sort of thing that may be good to reach out to someone that works at Vimeo or Brightcove (look on Linkedin) and see what they suggest, or if they have any pointers of programs to look at or certiby clay - Café LA Re: Canon 14x Full Manual Video Lens (works with XL1, etc) - 11 years agono idea. No issues that I've noticed so far, but I also am not dealing with any 3rd party plugins or hardware, so my setup may not be an accurate reflection of most production environments. If you can, install 10.8 (now at 10.8.1) on a spare machine (or spare drive) and test your setup when you can between projects.by clay - Café LA Re: Any benefits to upgrade to Mountain Lion - 11 years agoI'd stay with 10.6 for now. New OS releases are usually not ready for prime time until the .1 or .2 release, IMHO. Also, by the time the .1 or .2 releases are out, there will be enough user reports to be sure that all your hardware and software is compatible and will survive the jump. If you have a secondary machine that you want to test it out on, that's a great idea...figure out the quirks aby clay - Café LA DSLR + Separate Audio workflow - 12 years agoJust getting ready to start a program that was shot on a 5D, with audio recorded on a separate recorder (all talking heads). I have a pretty solid workflow going in FCP 6/7 for how to handle this type of program (syncing audio, creating subclips, organizing footage, etc), but haven't dived in to the same situation in X to know whether I should attempt this program in X or stick with 6/7 for now.by clay - Café LA - X Re: multi-user editing...is it possible yet? - 12 years agoThanks, Michael. I've seen the note about Xsan support...does the server HAVE to be running Xsan, or will a plain jane network folder work as well (assuming it has sufficient data rate to playback the footage)?by clay - Café LA - X multi-user editing...is it possible yet? - 12 years agoLooking seriously at making the jump to FCP X very shortly at our small facility (one editor = me, and occasional post production intern). Wondering if there's a good way that I can use our intern for some of the footage organization/tagging tasks, and then I take over to do the edit? Is it as simple as maintaining one version of the media folder (moving it back and forth between machines) andby clay - Café LA - X Re: Does anyone else have issues with Compressor 3 when working with DVCPROHD 720p footage? - 12 years agoEverything looks good in FCP and then when viewing the file in Quicktime Player. It's when I try to convert the DVCPROHD file that I've output from FCP to an H264 in Compressor that I get the squishing. Using the same preset in Compressor with some prores material gives me no problems. derekmok Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why go to ProRes in the fby clay - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Does anyone else have issues with Compressor 3 when working with DVCPROHD 720p footage? - 12 years agoI have been having more issues when working with 720p DVCPROHD files recently than I have for some time. I suppose that's because I've been doing more and more with the 5DmkII in 1080. But, the aspect ratio seems to always go out of whack for me when I drop a DVCPROHD file into Compressor 3 for encoding (to h264, usually). I get both squashed vertically and squashed horizontally. Or rendering a timeline in FCP 7? After effects? Motion?by clay - Café LA Re: Processing for DVD - 12 years agosetup a Qmaster cluster between your Macbook Pro and G5, and that should help a bit. Problem is with a 720p file is that Compressor is needing to downconvert to SD size first, and then encode the MPEG-2. That's going to be a bit of a bear on any machine, but the G5 will really show its age compared to just about any modern Intel system when it comes to crunching numbers in that way.by clay - Café LA Re: DVD Studio Pro Encoder - 12 years agoif your file from Compressor meets DVD specs, DVD SP will not re-encode.by clay - Café LA Re: Multi-cam shoot with 3 different formats..am I asking for trouble in the edit? - 12 years agothanks, Jude, for the reminder on the "old school" method of multi-cam. Good to have that option in my back pocket. But, I'd hope that I could find a common ground in shooting format, so I don't have a jillion hours of transcoding before I can edit, though if that's what needs to happen, I guess I'll do it!by clay - Café LA Multi-cam shoot with 3 different formats..am I asking for trouble in the edit? - 12 years agoHave a possible gig coming up, likely will be a 3 camera shoot. Sony HDR-FX1, Sony Z1U, and a Panasonic HVX-200 are the cameras that we have available (that's what the shooters have easy access to). I also have access to a Canon 5D, and may use that for some interesting angles if I can.
