I think I may have left out a crucial bit: The piece I'm cutting is a montage that will open the reel, landing on a menu where individual (full length) clips can be accessed. The montage is short, I'm thinking 30 - 40 seconds. Basically, even if someone watching it doesn't get any farther than the opening montage, at least they'll see something. Hi all. About to cut a reel together from projects that originated in a wide variety of formats. I have 4:3 full frame, 4:3 letterbox, 16:9 anamorphic, both NTSC and PAL to work with. Basically, the whole spectrum of standard def aspect ratios and standards. I've got slightly more NTSC than PAL footage, so I figured I'd do the cut in NTSC and make a PAL version later (I know I risk losing quaby Matthew Dillon - Café LA

I guess I'm a PREDITOR, too - but hopefully in the good (Andy Field) sense, rather than in the not-so-good sense that Joe describes. Just as an example, for a recent project, I got a bunch of video from a class-A designer / editor. FCP/STP allowed me to create a soundtrack for these pieces that brought it all home. Joey - That's exactly the thing I'd like to avoid (or, when I can't avoid it, that sends me googling for an interview with Walter Murch). I think we're on the same page, even if it's not the same *side* of the page. Anyway. This may speak to the relative size of markets. Nick, I'll certainly defer to you on that. For someone who has to run the same renaming routine every day (multiple times?), no question. All I'm saying is that it's possible with a two-action Automator workflow. In my experience, on a G5 dual, it'll be done by the time you swivel over to the laptop to check your mail, for example. Jumping in here from another perspective: Around about the time that FCP really matured, AND there was hardware there to support it (Decklink, Aja, et al.), I had a conversation with a friend of mine who had recently started a post/DVD shop. You can create an Automator workflow to do this as well. I use this one all the time: 1. Get specified Finder items 2. Rename Finder Items - Within Rename, choose Make Sequential from the pulldown menu. It lets you use the existing name or choose a new one. Mattby Matthew Dillon - Café LA

Anyone have ideas on the following: A client has delivered numerous Illustrator files that we have to convert, ultimately, to SD PAL video. The Illustrator files all consist of a single layer made up of "objects" and "paths" (What I know about Illustrator could be inscribed in 12 pt on the rim of a soda bottle -- halfway decent with Photoshop, though). In order to provide an accurate answer, we will need some more info: - What are the current standard and region code? - What will the disc have to play on -- just computers? Or set-top players too? I'm guessing you'll want to convert to NTSC. However, a PAL disc will play on computers. Unlike you guys, most of our US DVD players only play NTSC, not both standards. Andrew - FCE comes with: What's in the box ? DVDs containing Final Cut Express HD 3.5, LiveType 2, and Soundtrack 1.5 ? Printed and electronic documentation and tutorials So no Compressor. And it seems that you need to shell out the extra $30 for QT Pro. What I'm thinking of is the QT MPEG 2 Playback component, available as an additional-cost download from Apple Not sure if this is included in FCP / FCS or if you have to buy it separately. I only remember buying it separately for a machine that did not have FCP installed. I'd be surprised if it was not included with with the Pro Apps. M2V files do take a long time to preview in my experience, so that might be it. Alternatively, is it possible that just the QT MPEG2 components file is corrupt? (Since this seems to happen with any m2v, if I'm reading this correctly). Mattby Matthew Dillon - Café LA

Jude - The options are "Reconnect" and "Continue". I had chosen Continue before, and FCP was definitely frightened. So I just tried Reconnect and then in the resulting dialog manually skipped all offline files. Not sure if this is what you meant by Ignore, but it doesn't work either. Nick - Sweet. I'll try that. I just dumped a bunch of render files to free up some space. It's near the end of the project -- everything's delivered and I'm preparing for archiving. I just had to do a couple of quick fixes on a few clips. Obviously, I could re-render everything. Aside from being a time and space waster, I just don't think it's efficient. Hi all. I've been reading this forum for a long time, just registered today. I have a question, too: When I set a batch export via Compressor from an FCP project that has any offline media at all, a warning comes up (within FCP) that media is offline at the beginning of EVERY ENTRY in the batch.
