So....I have an OWC drive that is HARDWARE RAID 0 (I guess it's two drives in one enclosure). As I understand it the management of the RAID as a RAID 0 is handled by hardware / firmware in the drive itself that cannot be affected by simply formatting the drive within disk utility. That is, DISK UTILITYby Ewoo - Café LA Re: setting up external drives..... - 15 years agoGreat....thx for that info...... Just to clarify one thing...... The drive specs say it is hardware raid 0. I presume that means I can format the drive as a single standard drive with disk utility and this will not effect the RAID 0 performance of the drive. Does anyone know if this is correct? EWby Ewoo - Café LA Re: setting up external drives..... - 15 years agoCool...and this is perhaps a bit off topic......but for time machine backup and for Carbon Copy Cloner backup of my boot drive....what format should I choose? EWby Ewoo - Café LA Re: setting up external drives..... - 15 years agoHmmm.....no response..... To simplify...... When you purchase a new firewire drive, do you erase and format before you use it the first time, or just go with the out of the box setup as is? EWby Ewoo - Café LA setting up external drives..... - 15 years agoI have some new OWC Raid 0 firewire drives for FCP media and some other OWC standard firewire drives for time machine and carbon copy cloner backup boot drive. Should I format these drives with disk utility before I use them? My understanding is the RAID 0 drives are hardware raid - so I presume I wouldn't be using the disk utility raid option - but if I format this drive with disk utility, doesby Ewoo - Café LA FCS2....what to install??? - 15 years agoHi all, I am installing FCS2 on a new system and am wondering whether or not to install some of the content such as the "Audio Content for Soundtrack Pro" , "Motion Content" and "LiveFonts and LiveType Media". All this content seems to make up well over half of the potential size of the package and I save a lot of hard drive space without it.....I guess I can alwaby Ewoo - Café LA Re: Sony XDCAM EX storage rates..... - 15 years agoThanks Jeff.... Makes it very clear....also that calculator is very handy.....I downloaded it and used it already..... Would be nice if there was a version for my iphone EWby Ewoo - Café LA Re: Sony XDCAM EX storage rates..... - 15 years agoThanks for the prompt replies..... So I take it from what you say that the fact that we will be shooting 23.98 (not 29.97) and progressive (not interlaced), will have zero effect on the data storage requirements. Presumably the system works by giving you less compression when you reduce frame rates and shoot progressive, rather than reducing the data rate......is this correct? EWby Ewoo - Café LA Re: Best firewire / eSATA drives out there??? - 15 years agoThanks for these recommendations Shane..... As far as I can tell, the MaXX desktop drive is not a raid......so would I expect the performance to be substantially less? EWby Ewoo - Café LA Sony XDCAM EX storage rates..... - 15 years agoI have been searching and searching for the following information (can't believe it is so difficult to find!!!): I need to know the data storage requirements for SONY XDCAM EX footage, 23.98 1080P, at HQ 35mbs. So I am looking for how many GBs per hour or MBs per minute of storage is required. In terms of reliability, value for money, speed and functionality, are there any opinions on the best options out there. Also, for this project I expect to be using FW800, but is it worth getting a drive with eSATA as well for future projects? Functionality and environment for color grading is generally comparable to DaVinci - so compare it to that. If they want quick and dirty do FCP 3way then do it.....if they want something that would normally cost them 2500 or more......but you can probably do for half that price....give them thaby Ewoo - Café LA Red render bar when I drop a clip in my timeline.... - 15 years agoCaptured 1080sf23.98 10 bit uncompressed from HDCAM 1080sf23.98 tape via SDI through a KONA LHE (FCP 6.0.4, Mac Pro, 8core 2.8GHZ, 4GBram), Leopard 10.5.4, QT 7.5.0). More looking for handy hints on layout / keyboard shortcuts / workflow setup to help with speed - I know that the tools in FCP can technically provide what I need to do a decent grade.....but I'm finding it takes me about 5 times longer to acheive a result only half as good as when I use color. This one is driving me crazy.......how to I get the timeline indicator to the head of the next edit in V1 only. Do you think there is work for Apple Certified Color Trainers in LA? Anyone know what that kind of work pays by any chance? Also, what kind of background / qualifications would you need to have to get the Training certification? I plan to render it out using 10bit uncompressed (not Pro Res as I am going back to FCP5.1.4 - not 6). However I am a little confused about the DV NTSC proportions of 720 x 480 (whereas standard NTSC is 720 x 486). How should I handle this discrepancy now that I am leaving the NTSC codec.
