Best make sure you have adequate drive space and definitely consider getting an additional monitor. At least 22". Things can get a bit cramped on a 15" or 17" screen. I was used extensively on the beach and when captured using a different camera it would like your footage have playback issues. I would play it back on the camera it was recorded on and would have the same playback problems, but not in the exact same places. Anyway, I use Pro Res 422 mostly. I cut lots of HDV and cut on a Pro Res timeline. Considering what it looks like before I edit it and when it airs on the network I do the series for it is more than suitable. Intel Core 2 duo, 4gigs ram, daily to edit HD Pro Res 422 or DVCProHD. I have to say I love it!. I have very little problems. The only issue is the occasional out of memory flag when I am doing way too much rendering and not closing other sequences on the timeline. When we shoot these things, inevitably there is always something that happens (usually things popping out that shouldn't), but never as classic as a gal getting nailed. I am also a caretaker/babysitter for someone's "baby". I don't get credit for that either.... usually. He kept the HDD website in hopes he could make money as tech support. Anyway, I am most likely not going to get the drive replaced if in fact there is a problem with the components of the drive. Hopefully, it is just corruption in a partition and wiping it clean will do the job. Derek, I do have it backed up on more than one drive and when the day is over, which seems like never, everything gets saved manually. I am convinced I it lost in another project (or did I?) I just don't know which one. So I went through all the auto saved project of stuff that was worked on around the same time and nothing. I have my laptop connected to an external monitor via dvi. Mouse and Keyboard are set up via blue tooth. Separate user set just for the kids.
