If I hit the "capture now" command in FCP and then go into record on my camera, will the timecode match what's recording on the camera's tape?by ron - Café LA Re: tablet anyone? - 14 years agoCheck out the products from "Xkeys" In particular, the 20 key pad. It enables you to assign any kind of command, combination of commands or shortcuts to any of it's keys. It can reduce a multiple click action on the mouse down to one button. AND... I use it on the left side of my keyboard with my LEFT hand. So my cutting is more evenly divided between both hands. Or... is there a third party software that can do this and create .mov files? I have a Mac laptop and would really like to avoid having to buy a Focus or AJA to capture while shooting.by ron - Café LA Re: HDV and HD Cam - 14 years agoShane... Thanks for the info and advice. But as for ragging on the HDV format...to the point of "shame on you" or questioning my professionalism...well... I'd say you've been stuck in the editing bays too long. ;-) You're not seeing the bigger picture. I understand that you've encountered technical problems with the format... but honestly... Beta SP doesn't begin to compare wiby ron - Café LA Re: HDV and HD Cam - 14 years agoJeff... I guess you just answered my additional question. So in other words... FCP canNOT capture in Apple ProRez through firewire controlling the HDV deck to maintain time code as it would normally do. Right? And is this the same problem in reverse when outputting? If I've cut in Apple Pro Rez, am I NOT able to output to the HDV deck preserving time code? Thanks again.by ron - Café LA Re: HDV and HD Cam - 14 years agoOR..... Is it actually possible to capture into FCP in Apple Pro Rez through firewire from the HDV deck? Ronby ron - Café LA Re: HDV and HD Cam - 14 years agoShane... Just to be clear... I have a Black Magic HD Extreme capture card and I have an HDV deck. Are you suggesting that I NOT capture from the HDV deck through firewire but rather by taking an RGB output from the HDV deck into the Black Magic so as to digitize into the Pro Rez format? As far as not shooting HDV...LOL... that's not an option. I already own 2 cameras and all of tby ron - Café LA HDV and HD Cam - 14 years agoFriends... I shoot using a Canon XH A-1 - which is HDV in either 1080i or 24p (or "f" I cut in FCP Studio 2 I'm about to do a project that needs to be delivered on HD Cam. A few questions: 1.) Having shot in HDV, is there any advantage or disadvantage to working in FCP in a DIFFERENT format than the original capture? i.e. working in Apple Pro Rezby ron - Café LA 24P to NTSC - 15 years agoFriends... I've gotten some great advice here about this project previously...but now that it is done, I just wanted to check the current thinking on converting from 24P to Standard NTSC. I've finished a project which I shot and cut in 24p 1080. I am now ready to output the final cut - which must be in Standard NTSC. I want to keep the full image - i.e. letterbox. What is conby ron - Café LA Re: 24 or 30 Advice - 15 years agoJohn... the only thing about good old NTSC is that I'd like to take advantage of having HDV masters in terms of quality and the ability to move or resize the pic in post. So basically I'd be shooting 16x9 HDV at 60i....then use a Film look filter in post. Or shooting 16x9 HDV at 24p. I guess the other question is...either way...should I convert the footage to SD 4x3 NTSC as I digitize?by ron - Café LA Re: 24 or 30 Advice - 15 years agoThese are actually PSA spots. Basically talking heads.by ron - Café LA 24 or 30 Advice - 15 years agoI'm shooting some TV spots on a tight budget. The output will be a regular Digi Beta 30 fps. I'm planning to shoot in HDV on my Canon XH A1. And of course I want it to look like film. I've heard conflicting advice about this. Should I shoot in 24p and let FCP do the conversion to 30fps on the output? Or should I shoot in 60i and do some kind of film look in FCP? Thanks in advanceby ron - Café LA Re: CHV & Boris Plugins - 15 years agoI tried that...and it still doesn't work. If I could just get the CHV plulgins to render in FCP...I'd be okay for this particular project. Any other ideas? Ronby ron - Café LA Re: CHV & Boris Plugins - 15 years agoOh and by the way, I'm using OS 10.4.11 and QT 7.2.0 Thanks.. Ronby ron - Café LA CHV & Boris Plugins - 15 years agoI'm working in FCP 5.1.4. With Mac G5 Dual Core. I have just installed some new 3D plugins from CHV and Boris. (3D grid etc...) I've followed all of the instructions in the "FAQ" Wiki section regarding problems with these but I'm still having one problem. Whenever I use one of the generators to build a 3D effect... when I try to render it...FCP crashes. Thanks in advance for yoby ron - Café LA Re: Plugin Fix - 15 years agoMichael... Well I've done the caps on caps off fix 4 times. I've thrown out all of the cache preference files. Started and restarted. Everything I can think of. Still no luck. None of the Boris 4.0 plugins appear in my effects bin in FCP 5.1.4 They used to be there. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Ronby ron - Café LA Re: Plugin Fix - 15 years agoOh!!! I read it as " you MEAN this?" As in "are you serious?" LOL Sorry... Thanks for the info....however it is still not fixing the problem. Will keep trying. Ronby ron - Café LA Re: Plugin Fix - 15 years agoNot sure why you're asking "you mean this?"...but thanks for the info. Ronby ron - Café LA Plugin Fix - 15 years agoDoes anyone remember the fix for getting FCP to recognize plugins that are in the plugin location in Application Support but NOT showing up in FCP. (Specifically Boris Continuum for FCP 5.1.4) It came out a few years ago. You had to hold down a button while quitting FCP. Then hold down another while re-launching.... I forget. I just remember having this problem before and there was a fby ron - Café LA Electricity Zap Plug In - 15 years agoDoes anyone know of a plugin for FCP 5.1.4 that would create the effect of electricity zapping a logo or an object? (I'm having trouble contacting Nikola Tesla.) Thanks in advance for your help. Ronby ron - Café LA HDLink Pro problem - 15 years agoFriends... I'm working on a Mac Pro - OSX 10.4.11, Quick Time 7.2, FCP 5.1.4. I have a Decklink HD Extreme which outputs SDI to my Digibeta deck and to a HDLink which converts it to a DVI signal for my Gateway HD Monitor. Everything's been working great. Then... I decided to updgrade the HDLink to the HDLink PRO mainly because it gives you 6 audio outputs from the SDI signal.by ron - Café LA Re: Talking Head Transitions - 15 years agoPersonally I prefer a simple right to left push for this. To me, the key issue is speed. A short push of 3 to 5 frames may be appropriate for upbeat or comic material but too jarring for more serious subject matter. If you go to a 10 or 15 frame push, it is far less jarring and supports the tone of the speaker. As a viewer, I believe we accept this convention after seeing it a couple of timby ron - Café LA Re: Audio ducker? - 15 years agotrevora... How would I de-embed the additional audio channels from the SDI signal?by ron - Café LA Re: Audio ducker? - 15 years agoFriends... I've used "side-chaining" for years in audio post. In my opinion, no amount of mixing - manual or automated - works as well for ducking down the music under an announcer giving the illusion that the music track is hotter without getting in the way. I use a 4-1 ratio with an attack time of 5 and release time of 20. I do NOT have the problem when I am digitizing through my Black Magic Decklink SDI or RGB input. I've given up trying to figure it out since the clips are fine when played back.by ron - Café LA Old Firewire 400 Drives - 15 years agoFriends... I am working on a Mac Dual Core 3Gig with FCP 5.1.4. I have four Firewire 400-250gig drives that contain 5 years worth of sound effects, music, QT movies, graphics etc. Considering these are aging drives, I want to transfer the media to a new drive.
