I am constantly on the web I also used to have 2 edit suites hooked up to a PC & Mac network - no problems on the Mac network and no problems on the PC network except for when the PC network crashed or got viruses - but my Macs just kept going regardless. I used to work as Design Director for a company called The Loop and I was constantly having to explain to freelancers and companies supplying us with material (even to Graphics people!) what dpi, lpi, pixel res & ratios are and when and where to use them. I used to have "claw" hand or RSI from mouse use - 10 years ago I used my 1st Wacom for Editing and never looked back - it's both faster and better for you. I have had my Intuos 1 since they came out and its a solid well constructed reliable unit that is still a joy to use. Get one today! Hey no problem - I would only bother to transfer to 184 minute tapes BEFORE you log and capture - otherwise as you say the TC will not be the same. At the end of the day a PDV DVCAM tape is far more robust than a MiniDV tape (even the highest quality ones) so for long term storage or multiple reuse the DVCAM route will stand up to the wear and tear much better. Any of you compared it to the 23" & 30" Apple displays? How does it match up (apart from the extra inputs and inch)? Of course the main benefit of the 30" is 2x 100% SD 1:1 pixel Canvas and Viewer windows & space for the browser next to it. (Running mine @ 2560x1600 form an ATI X800). You might need to update the version of FCP & Quicktime you are running and get the Pro Apps Runtime 3.1 (6.1MB version) downloaded from Apple. I was fixing four FCP Edit suites at the BBC yesterday - 2 of which had the same problem they also crashed on log & capture. They also needed the preferences dumped and the permissions repaired as Derek has suggested. The route I used was: Ifby Ben King - Café LA

You would normally deinterlace or blend the fields on a screen still from video anyway so in that respect yes - you would negate the need to do this when using progressive video.by Ben King - Café LA

As deb mentioned JPEG is lossy but it really depends how compressed you make them - compressing a high res photograph as JPEG at 80% or higher I would say most people won't be able to tell the difference especially on video. However if you do any JPEG on clean line art or graphics that have text - you will clearly see compression artifacts around hard edges and colour/luminance changes. If youby Ben King - Café LA

TIFF or Tagged Image File Format was originally developed for Print and can be CMYK or RGB they can also have layers and vector-based clipping path and are either uncompressed, JPEG or RLE encoding Be careful when importing TIFFs that they are the correct format for video ie: RGB single layer. That IS bad - I would report the person and ask them to give you the crossgrade free as compensation - bad sales reps give manufacturers bad names. I would write a letter of complaint and speak to whoever deals with consumer rights in the US as this sounds extremely messed up. At the end of the day you can't run a successful company if you give too much stuff away for free can you? Especially the professional products with which people make money. The recompile and testing and optimising and production of software has to be paid for in someway. Especially Pro Apps which are specifically designed and optimised for certain processors. I suppose there are forum's for Adobe Premiere that has a "problems, crashes and bugs section" that's considerably larger than all the worldwide FCPUG's put together... Hahaha Seriously - have run almost every system or worked on them - PC is just too unstable for work and too insecure for personal stuff. I use the Tempo-X 8 eSATA II Card With a Hitachi 7K500 500GB SATA II drive on each channel. For a total 4000GB. I get a sustained data rate of about 450MBps. Which Dual 2.7GHz G5 do you have? The original Dual 2.7GHz G5 have PCI-X not PCIe - only the Dual Core 2.7GHz G5 have PCIe. Make sure you are careful when ordering that you get the bus type! Regards Benby Ben King - Café LA

OK guys Basically you used to be able to load SWF in Quicktime Pro and export as whatever you liked... Sadly no more. So... Option 1: Go back and get them to export Mov files for you Option 2: Get a screen capture program like Snapz Pro (You can record Sound and vision of your desktop) and Record a movie form the Flash Player then convert it to Quicktime. Have just talked to some guys running DPS Velocity over here in the UK they say: Lots of bugs Lots of money Not as nice and less easy to do the things you want to in the way you want to. They have just put in an Order for 2 FCP suites and an Xserve after test driving an Uncompressed FCP solution.
