Hopefully though, the format will mature into a true 24p, 25p & 30p format with (hopefully) variable Mbps compression settings to allow for less artifacts albeit at the expense of storage time. With the advent of cheaper faster & higher quality CMOS Sensors and better support for interchangeable lenses - maybe thby Ben King - Café LA Re: 1080i 24p or 1080 60i is cheaper in the final analysis? - 19 years agoYeah the Cineframe mode on the SONY HDV cameras is a faux progressive - achieved by literally dropping one whole video field of information... So instead of 1440x1080 (stretched to the equivalent of 1920x1080 on screen) you get 1440x540 Half the vertical resolution!!! If you want a good lowdown on SONY's HDV2 Cineframe vist Adam Wilts website here: Before you shoot - have you considered theby Ben King - Café LA Re: OT - amusing issue with dell 24" - 19 years agoaw... It's true that some formats like MPEG-1 will want you to do 16x16px divisible sizes or fixed resolutions but with most Windows Media, Quicktime and Real CODECs they don't limit you too much. ------------------------------------------ The key things to bear in mind are: For downloads andby Ben King - Café LA Re: External hard drive choices for G5 - 19 years agoYou know what - Derek you have just jinxed me! No sooner than I say LaCie are great (and they have been this last 2 years for me) - than my 500GB goes and throws a wobbler!!! Am copying the contents over to my 4TB Raid and gonna wipe it Ignore what I said about LaCie - although g-tech & promax are still in my good books... Remember folks - Murphy's (sod's) law is just waiting for someoby Ben King - Café LA Re: Pan & zoom still photos - 19 years agoNearly Derek you are trying to explain something out of context - its a common misconception that large dpi means large files - maybe I should explain... If you scan a 2"x 2" Graphic in at 72dpi then the resulting file will be 144x144px - a tiny files size and not really good enough for video. The same image scanned in at 400dpi gives a 800 x 800 pixel image which you could use fby Ben King - Café LA Re: External hard drive choices for G5 - 19 years agoContrary to Deb - I would highly recommend Lacie FW800 drives as long as you format them HFS+ with Journalling off. They have been the most reliable external drives that I've tested over the last 3 years. There was a time that Lacie were awful and very unreliable but they have moved on and now are one of the best. NEVER run Nortons on Mac OS X either their useless firewall (as Mac os X has a perfectly good one built in) or their awful System Utilities A couple of years ago Norton's Utilities nearly lost all the data on my HDDs (yes it was the "correct" version for the OS) and I spent a very long time sorting it out with Tech Tool Pro - Disk Utility and Cby Ben King - Café LA Re: HDV Pixels - 19 years agoFree!!! Thanks for asking thoughby Ben King - Café LA Re: HDV Pixels - 19 years agoYeah as far as I'm aware 1035i is still a 1920x1080 raster - so it should fill the same area... Unfortunately I can only go from a guy who worked on it 18 years ago (yes you read correctly 18 years ago the BBC and other peeps were working on HD!). Please bear in mind that I was told second hand about 1035i and in a pub conversation so my info might be a little wrong but I think it should stillby Ben King - Café LA Re: 8mm film conversion - 19 years agoAh I see - you're getting the shutter on screen - I think that your best bet is to try recording both 18fps & 30fps (29.97fps) If you choose the 29.97fps NTSC then you will need to reduce the speed of the clip to 60% actually 60.0645% this should get you closest to the original speed of 18fps Hope this helps! It's Low budget telecine! I can't think of any reason to sync the framerate as you only want the footage at the correct speed don't you? What you could do is: transfer 3x 60minute miniDV tapes to Large DVCAM 184min Use SONY PDV-184N NON-CHIP DVCAM tapes This would make a much more managable 34 tape source and would be more robust as far as long term storage.
